Certainty

Are you feeling uncertain about yourself today?

This is Vince Miller.

Our text today is from 1 Timothy 4:12. It reads:

Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity. — 1 Timothy 4:12

When we are about to try something new, we can meet with feelings of uncertainty. This is because we’ve never taken the steps. So at these moments, it’s good to have an experienced man show us the way, which is what Paul is doing right here with his young protege Timothy. Timothy feels uncertain, so Paul strengthens his certainty by suggesting two actions.

The first action is to stop. He must stop comparing himself to others because uncertain men who listen to the voices of self-comparison and self-disqualification never start. Instead, they stall. And if they stall too long, they’ll stop rather than start.

The second action is to set. He must set his character by giving attention to things like his speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. Paul understands that character matters even more in those moments of uncertainty. Because uncertain moments present a test. A test that proves who we really are. And giving attention to our character is far more important than what we know or don’t know. It’s even more important than what we do right or might do wrong. A man whose character is set will always take action from the right motivation, which proves the message.

So how about you?

How are you feeling today? Are you feeling a little uncertain? Develop your certainty. Stop listening to the voices of self-comparison and self-disqualification. Then set your character to God’s will, and then take the next step. We desperately need Godly men who are willing to step into uncertain moments because people need to hear about unchanging God.
