A World Of False Witnesses

A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish. — Proverbs 19:9

So there are four types of witnesses:

  1. The Expert Witness. A person who testifies a field of expertise.
  2. The Eye-Witness. A person who testifies about what they have seen.
  3. The Character Witness. A person who testifies about a person's character.
  4. The Fact Witness. A person who testifies about specific facts in a case.

The evidence each witness presents is called "testimonial evidence." It is a presentation from their perspective. They present, and then a judge or jury must determine if their testimony is true or false.

The challenge with "testimonial evidence" is it can be very subjective. A more substantial type of evidence is called "physical evidence." Examples include fingerprints, blood, a weapon, or other physical objects. Thus, what we call "testimonial evidence," the more subjective type, puts a witness in a unique place of power over the fate of an individual, which is a serious matter. And this is clarified by our text.

In our lives, "testimonial evidence" is everywhere. And we tend to believe it today like it's physical evidence when it is merely testimony, and sometimes a false testimony. This is falsely accusing some. Others are being falsely upheld by it. It works both ways.

And yet there are two fates for the false witness in our text. The first is punishment in the here and now. The second is perishing in the hereafter. The writer states that false witness is trouble now and later. This should bring us to pause and persuade us to take more seriously the words we speak about anyone, anywhere, at any time.

Gentlemen, take care of the testimony you believe today. Whether it be a pop star, politician, or pastor. There is a lot of false testimony in our world today. And remember, you have a responsibility to testify to the truth regardless of the cost. It's the best way to live life now and later.

ASK THIS: Where are you hearing false testimony?

DO THIS: Be truthful all the time.

PRAY THIS: God, help me tell the truth and be a truthful man.

PLAY THIS: Testify — Maverick City Music.

Thanks Vince! Very good topic today. I hear these types of false testimonies everyday from people who are convinced that there beliefs is the truth. I have been guarding my own heart and life to not aide in the spread of false testimony. We must always go to the word of God for the real Truth!!

Vince, thanks for making the bullseye clear, and for helping us to maintain it at front and center in our lives!

Then Pilate said Jesus, so, You are a King? Jesus responded, “you say that I am a king. For THIS purpose I was born, and for THIS purpose I have come into the world – to bear witness to THE Truth. Everyone who is of THE Truth listens to my voice.

Gentlemen, we are ambassadors of THE Truth. This assignment cannot be achieved and maintained in our own strength. Rather, we must remain connected to THE Vine (John 15:5), because apart from Christ, we can do nothing, but with Him, nothing shall ever be too difficult. Find Him, listen to Him, and cling to Him. He is Truth!

Jacks comment is so true of our society today. In fact too many people believe the false testimonial witnesses so much that they actually don’t trust or themselves discredit the true and tried experts with the scientifically proven evidence.

  4. Jack says:

Social media has allowed many of us to become, at least in our own mind, expert witnesses. An expert witness is allowed to draw an opinion based on facts in a case. Social media allows us to generate our own facts and draw conclusions from same.
