Ask A Wiser Man

Wisdom is with the aged, and understanding in length of days. —Job 12:12

I don't know about you, but sometimes when I need advice, I only go to those who tell me what I want to hear. I look for people with the same biases that I have regarding a situation, and then ask them for their opinion. In return, I get the answer I want to hear. I've even been guilty of telling only part of the story to confirm my biases. Have you done that? I think we do this because sometimes the truth might be hard for us to accept so, we work hard not to hear it.

In my teens, I did this a lot. It was easy. Other teens with a short sight of life saw everything from my perspective. Therefore, they told me everything that I wanted to hear. Maybe this is because friends with the same perspective see things the same way. But maybe it is also because they found it challenging to tell me the truth.

I have come to learn that those who are older Christians have a lot of wisdom. And if I can bring myself to ask them questions, they will freely give me great answers because their longer-lived life comes with more experiences — both success and failure — and with this comes wisdom that I don't have.

Today instead of getting more opinions from those who will parrot back what you want to hear, go to the aged. Find some person further ahead of you in their Christian life who has been down the road you are traveling. Talk with them about the issues you are facing, and invite them to speak into your life. And get some wisdom it will lengthen your days.

ASK THIS: Who can you get wisdom from today? (Share their name below).

DO THIS: Text, email, or call that person right now.

PRAY THIS: God, my way has not been working. Today I commit to doing life a little differently. I will pursue someone wiser than me who can speak into my issues. A person who is trustworthy and faithful to you. I pray that this person will give me the wisdom I need.

PLAY THIS: You Are My Vision.

  2. Cory B says:

My friend Sammie. He has grown significantly and speaks truth. It’s not always Christian based, but it holds me accountable.

  3. Dennis says:

Never underestimate the value of wisdom that an older Brother may have. I had a Brother in Christ, who really was almost the same age as me. but was full of wisdom, godly wisdom and we had some very deep conversations. He lost a battle with cancer and the Lord called him home. I miss him dearly as our relationship was one that God definitely made happen . So, if you are blessed to have this kind of relationship, never take it for granted

Nate Bruns- 40 years wise- a heart serving God.
