Be More Fruitful

ENGLISH

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. — Galatians 5:22-23

So let's start by noticing what's easy to agree on here. Let's agree that the term "fruit" is synonymous with "produce." And that a produce is a production of something else. For example, when you walk through the "produce" aisle of your local grocery store, you will see fruits produced by a plant — bananas, oranges, and strawberries. Each fruit is the result of the unseen activity of its respective plant.

In the same way, the Spirit produces fruit. It's one Spirit making all kinds of noticeable fruit. And as we are being led by this Spirit  the by-product in our life is fruit. But the critical part is the unseen work that's done by the Spirit that now lives in us. And in the surrounding verses Paul tells us how to join with this Spirit to get fruitful results:

  1. "walk by the Spirit" (Gal 5:16) — we must take progressively action.
  2. "be led by the Spirit" (Gal 5:18) — we must follow his lead.
  3. "keep in step with the Spirit" (Gal 5:25) — we must be obedient one step at a time.

So here is the concept put together into one thought. If you want the outcomes, produce, or fruit of the Spirit then don't worry so much about the fruit. The fruit is the product of the unseen work. What you need to be concerned about is "taking progressive action by following the Spirit's lead obeying one step at a time."

And as Jesus said this is how we "remain in the vine." And as we actively remain in him, then we produce all kinds of fruit. Not just one, but many. And that's the kind of fruitful production we want.

ASK THIS: How will you take progressive action by following the Spirit's lead obeying one step at a time?

DO THIS: Share what you plan on doing today below.

PRAY THIS: God, make the voice of your Spirit more clear to me and may I listen more attentively — Amen.

I need to remind myself that satisfying the desires of the flesh is in DIRECT OPPOSITION with God, so I need to fight the urge and take those thoughts captive and make them obedient to Christ.

David Josker

I need to stay focused on the spirit and not myself.

Ed

First by going to church and hearing the word of god.
Second, by tuning out all the noise and being quiet myself…
Thirdly, by shutting my mouth…. It’s gotten my in so much trouble

Bill B.

By being attentive to the promptings, alarms, and suggestions of the Holy Spirit and act immediately upon them.

Sam

My plan it to take the time and make the effort too truly LISTEN to the spirit and follow what it tell me and not just what I want to hear

David

I need to keep in step with Spirit!

David F

To assess how our “keeping step with the Spirit”, or “remaining in the vine” is going, seems wise to walk down the produce aisle of Galatians 5:22-23 once in a while. I then pray for the fruit that’s less evident in me. It just dawned on me… I should ask this of others too – what fruit of the Spirit do the see… and not see! In me. Lord, do your work in me!

I’m going to have lunch this week with a former colleague that has been on my heart lately.

David L. Trima

We may not see our part in the fruit. But just keep planting that seed

Tim S.

Lord help me to hear you and then the courage to go and do it

Marty

To follow his lead, and be obedient to it, I must have more time in his word..
