Be Uncommon
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. — Acts 4:13-14
This moment was captured by a disciple named Luke. It must have been a breathtaking moment. He uses so many descriptive words to capture Peter and John's boldness and how the crowd reacted to them. The religious leaders, especially, were baffled by who these men were and what they were doing. Peter and John were somewhat of a paradox to them. They were a combination of unusual boldness yet completely lacked formal training and education.
So what made these common men uncommon?
The answer is simple. They spent time with Jesus.
You know there are days that I feel common or even less than common. I feel inadequate. I feel like a failure as a husband, father, leader, and man. In this inadequacy, I sometimes reach for something to help me feel adequate. But that is not what these men did. They did not try to resolve inadequacy by taking matters into their own hands. They did not pursue titles, education, certification, or training. They simply spent time with Jesus, and somewhere in their commonness, Jesus made them uncommon. And to outsiders, it appeared in the form of boldness and miracles.
Do you feel common today? Then spend time with our uncommon Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He makes what is common uncommon. And then get ready because those around you might perceive something miraculous — Christ working in you.
