Brothers In The Spirit

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. — Galatians 6:1

I love this transition from Galatians 5 to 6 because Paul helps us see that there is a Spirit that works in us to guide us, but this does not rule out the working of the Spirit in others. The Spirit works through us and others for mutual benefit driving us to accountability with God.

But accountability on this level assumes a few things that are evident in this text. First, that we're in close enough proximity to know the transgression of another brother. Second, that we're attentive to the Spirit enough to feel a conviction about their present challenges. Third, that we're motivated to restore them for their benefit, not to draw attention to our holiness. Fourth, that we're humble in our approach so that the way we correct will not lead us into sin.

But fellas, it's the first assumption in this list that I think is the big one. We are simply not close enough to another brother for him to even know what's going on in his life. Do you know why? Because we know how to isolate ourselves so that we can do whatever we want. And then one day, we look up and discover we're in a huge mess all alone because we hid, isolated, and secluded ourselves from other brothers because we preferred the flesh over the Spirit. And guess what. A little bit of the Spirit's accountability could have stopped it all.

Today I want you to name a brother who has helped you spiritually. Share his name in the comments and, in short, how the Spirit worked in him to help you. And if you are out there today and don't have a spiritual brother, I pray God will put a name on your mind today, and you will run to him before you find yourself in a huge mess.

ASK THIS: Who is a brother who has helped you spiritually, and what did he do? Or who someone you need to call, email, or text today?

DO THIS: Share this below.

PRAY THIS: God, put a brother in my life to help me with...

    Hey Vince,
My name is Jesse Hernandez and I don’t know if you remember me but I was the guy that was just released from doing a little time in the workhouse back in 2015 and was invited to give my testimony at a retreat where you were present and spoke as well, I came with a guy named Bill. I just wanted to reach out to say thank you for your daily devotional as they are a great help along the way, I’ve learned and am still learning sooo much from them and every now and then I receive a word from you that answers a lingering question that I might have at that point in time, today was one of those days. I’ll be choosing a buddy of mine to hook up with more often to encourage me and hold me accountable for my actions as well and his name is Tom Kiefer. Thanks again for your daily devotion’s and please don’t hesitate to reach out for any kind of help you may need as I’ll be praying for you and your ministry.
    God bless you,
    Jesse Hernandez

Way to go, Jesse. I’m praying for you, for a strong spiritual brother, and that you let the Spirit rule in your life just like I need to do in mine. Let’s stay strong in Him.

Jose has been a good friend for several years now, but has become closer in the last year as he has helped listen and ask the right questions to make sure I’m processing things carefully and in Godly manner. He’s encouraged me to not lower my standards and expectations for other church leaders despite their recent betrayal, lies and their attacks against other leadership, him, me and even our families. Despite our long talks, he’s always listening and sharing with me from his heart. God has used him tremendously to help me heal better and not leave our church or get bitter.
