Burn The Ships

Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily. — Acts 19:18-20

This is an all-out purge. Believers held a public confession and book burning. And the approximate value today of these assets? $4-5 million. Wow!

If you ever heard the expression “burn the ships,” that is what these believers did. This phrase is said to have come from the 1519 Spanish conquest of Mexico when commander Hernán Cortés burned his ships so that his men would be forced to win or die. Noble or not, what commander Cortés did was determine a point of no return for him and his men. And this is what these believers do here. They determined a point of no return not against people but evil practices.

Sometimes this is needed. We need a declarative moment of no return. A moment we cannot turn back. And by removing the option to do the easy thing, we are forced to do the hard thing. But we do the hard thing because of the immense value. The net gain is so much more that we are willing not just to leave it behind but to burn it completely.

What do you need to burn today?

  • An action?
  • An opportunity?
  • An event?
  • An attitude?
  • A language or a word?

If you don't know what that thing is you need to burn is, then do this:

  1. Reflect on where you need to grow in your relationship with God.
  2. Determine one factor that's holding you back.
  3. Assess its value.
  4. Measure it against the net gain of living in a closer relationship with God.

And then "burn the ships."

ASK THIS: What do you need to burn?

DO THIS: Burn the ships.

PRAY THIS: God, show me what needs to be thrown in the fire today. And then give me strength to burn it.

Lord give me wisdom top recognize anything that I have to burn when it arises and the strength to cut the ties.
