"For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God?"—Galatians 1:10
Most of our lives are spent understanding the truth buried in this question. But be careful, because while the text reads easily, casting aside "the approval man" is a difficult task. Maybe this is because the allure of approval has such a powerful attraction for as men. For example, consider your relationship with your biological father—what son out of a desire for approval doesn't try to win his approval through obedience. Or consider your relationship with your wife—what husband out of a passion for approval doesn't attempt to gain her approval through hard work and advancement. Or consider your relationship with your children—what parent out of a desire for approval doesn't try to win their support by providing for them. But in the end what is the result of this quest? Does it not result in disappointment with fathers when success is achieved, and compliments are not given? Does it not result in animosity with your wife when appreciation is not shown? Does it not result in codependence and enablement when kids don't take responsibilities for their actions? Today stop seeking the approval of mere man (your father, wife, and children), seek approval from God and desire something better—both for yourself and for them.
DO THIS: Seek approval, but only from God.
PRAYER: God, I need to understand this deeply, but I know the lessons are hard to learn.
