Complete + Equipped

...that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. — 2 Timothy 3:17

If we read these words inside of the immediate context, we cannot miss the point. Completeness and equipping only come from God. He supplies the directions for how we get to where he wants us to be. Without God, we are mortals, but not "men of God." And to become a complete and equipped follower, we must pick up the instruction book he has provided, which is the life-giving instructions he breathed on us. If we choose to look to other sources for spiritual directions, we may be men, but not spiritual men.

But this is a hard-learned lesson for Christians. Every day we are persuaded to seek fulfillment and provision in things of this life. We sold the idea that provision is sought by way of money, status, and power. We believe that completeness will come when having a specific title, a determined income, an allotment for retirement, a particular trinket, and maybe a specific leader in political power. But not one of these things provides us with the fulfillment and provision we want. These are only temporal attempts at trying to meet a spiritual need. We need a solution that satisfies our longings on a soul level. And this is something only God can provide. Which he has already provided by way of his Word.

If you are looking to be complete and equipped, there is only one way to find it. There is only one way your soul will ever find satisfaction. It is in the God who created you. The God who breathed into you your first breath. And the God who will sustain you by the breath of his Scripture. Cancel all other means and methods and find salvation in God alone who can actually make you complete and equipped for every good work.

ASK THIS: Are you seeking fulfillment in something other than God?

DO THIS: Confess it below. (Confess in the comment section below.)

PRAY THIS: God, I want to lay down some things before you today. Receive my confession and make me whole and complete.

PLAY THIS: Trust in You.

there are times in my life when I am seeking fulfillment as recognition from others. this and lustfully thinking about women that are not my loving, caring, God-honoring wife. neither one of these things EVER leads to a positive outcome, so God please remind me when I am going down this mental path and lead me in the way everlasting.

I confess that I went to a place I shouldn’t have gone. My wife found out and she’s devastated. God I want to lay this down in front of you. When I am stressed I have tried to deal with it in my own strength Lord. I listened to the lie that I should keep it to myself. I confess that I am not walking with you through this struggle. God please have mercy on me!!! Please teach me to flee from the sin that seeks to destroy my marriage and my walk with you. IThis struggle is so hard. I feel so burdened, so weary, so ashamed. Please hold me!!!

I think it is natural to seek things or circumstances to fill our needs. I know I have done this far too many times and the outcome has time after time left me empty and asking “where are You, God”? Supernatural and personal inward, Spirit led, scripture enforced, these are the highway signs I should follow. When I have done this, I do feel equipped and purposeful in His good work.

Being single I find myself “looking” for a woman, who I could eventually marry. This leads me into trouble, and being discontent. I need to just follow Jesus and trust God; He will provide if that is His will for me.

      Hi Matt,
I had gone through 4 marriages and several broken relationships that let to pain and disappointment. Why? Because I was making all the wrong choices , looking for the wrong attributes, doing it all out of flesh. One day, I went to my knees and asked God to intervene and if I was supposed to have a soulmate, that He lead me to her. The response I got from The Holy Spirit was that I need a woman who knows the true meaning of love as defined by scriptures. Well, God placed that woman in my life, now here is the strange part, she is totally opposite of what I would have chosen for myself, (emphasis on I) . But we were married in 2011.
Keep in mind I am now 62, so that shows us how when we submit to our Father’s will and not try to do life on our own, He provides what is good for us. Father knows best.

Dennis, thank you so much for your comments. They make a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing your experience with me. Everything you wrote really “hits home” with me. I seem to be looking for the wrong attributes. Thank You.

At any given time, lots of things: money, my job, my relationships, my “things.”

Most often though, it is what other people think of me. I too am a people pleaser and that can either lead to keeping score or resentments. Usually both.

  7. Dave Benson says:

The man “of” God may complete. The bit and pieces the world offer us keep changing and falling apart but God is all we need to be whole and complete! How great is our God!

I’ve been guilty of putting pastors and others on pedestals. Lord, use me where and help me keep your word above the words of men in my heart

Possible it’s my job, so basically if that’s what I think it could be than I’m pretty sure it is.
