A Man That Counters Culture
Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.—1 Peter 3:7
Most of us don't realize how counter-cultural this statement would have been. All we see is the inflammatory phrase "the weaker vessel." Thus we miss seeing how bold and brave Peter was in saying this as a man in a culture where women were oppressed, discounted, uneducated, and deficient unless they were married to a man who inputted them with an identity and significance. So Peter urges husbands to live with and honor wives as equal heirs. Now that is a revolutionary idea in Peter's time. An idea not only inconceivable but hard to understand how to do. But that's what brave men do. They do things that have not been done. And a brave man who fears God chooses to believe God's Word and act on it regardless of cultural barriers and implications—and therefore becomes a counter-cultural man.
