Difficulty Is Here

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.—2 Timothy 3:1

Many who follow Christ wrongly believe that the Christian journey is supposed to be free from difficulty. But this is because we think that freedom from sin also infers freedom from difficulty. But if you have not figured this out yet, this is not the case. In fact, Jesus told us that some would buy into the idea of freedom from sin, thinking that there would be freedom from difficulty. Listen to what Jesus himself said in the Parable of the Soils.

As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.—Matthew 13:20-21

In this way, Jesus warns followers of easy-believism. Therefore, as a teacher, Jesus always challenged people's misconceptions about the spiritual life. It's not a life of ease and comfort on this side of heaven. While we await ease and comfort there, we will not experience it here.

Additionally, listen to what he said to those who followed him who made this assumption.

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me."—Matthew 16:24

That sounds pretty challenging and difficult.

And so here Paul tells Timothy the same. He is looking in the future for Timothy, and with wisdom, he says, "Proceed with caution. It's going to get worse."

So here is your call to action today. Assume difficulties await. But don't live in drudgery. Be aware of the difficulties without living in defeat. Anchor yourself in the hope that sin was defeated while we continue to endure living in a sinful world.

ASK THIS: Are you anchored for the coming difficulty?

DO THIS: Decide to endure longer. (Share your decision in the comments below)

PRAY THIS: God, give me endurance for the season of difficulty.

PLAY THIS: Danny Gokey. The Comeback.

  1. Greg says:

Difficulty will come and choices will be made. We must make our decisions preemptively. I will stand for truth. I will stand for righteousness. I will stand for grace. I will not bow to fear. I will not follow the world’s way.

  2. Eddie Ackerman says:

I have seen people finish well as believers. My anchor is to see those wonderful people that are my examples of being the salt and light in the world while we are alive, and I will see them again in Heaven.

  3. Cory B says:

I’m anchored for a tropical storm, not a hurricane. I’m still a work in progress. Thank you God for putting people in my life to get me this far.

  4. Ed says:

To live with joy in knowing Christ finished it on the cross and these are times that must pass. Praying for patience as my frustrations have made me cynical and angry this past year towards those that would seek to control and mislead others both at work, in my family and in politics. To see others as Christ sees them… lost, and in need of the way, the truth and the life

  5. Dennis says:

Romans 12:12 Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer.
We are in those times and days of difficulty but we must push forward.

  6. Chris says:

I have been a season of difficulty. I’ve been praying for my writing partner who doubts my abilities, but I am the one that created the show based on my life. I know I need to love those that hurt me but how? I’ve been praying for him and now there seems to be a disconnect. Perhaps Jesus is working behind the scenes and fighting this battle.

      • Chris says:

Thanks! I have nothing to prove to this guy and I don’t know how to stop thinking about this. The unknown result can be a scary thing until that unknown finally reveals itself.

        • Cory B says:

Every time my hamster wheel keeps turning over someone or something I keep repeating “Lord, I give this to you,” until the negativity is gone. Comes back in 5 minutes… I do it again. It has worked wonders for me. Good luck & praying for you. 🙏

    • Dennis says:

James 4:7 Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Brother, you have to want to overcome those fleshly desires and take all the steps to avoid giving into temptations. When temptation comes, and it will, you must practice training your focus on the things of God. Find a scripture that resonates with you that you can train yourself to recall in times of need. Also get an accountability partner, Iron Sharpens Iron. You may need to make some adjustments , such as avoiding the situations or environment that causes you to give into those temptations. Example , if you find yourself wanting to view porn when no one is home, put blockers on your devices and make it a practice to stay occupied on a project, etc. Change of habits.

  10. John Krumm says:

My cross is just that, mine and mine alone. I choose the next step. Thank You for being the Helper, Holy Spirit. One more step, Lord Jesus, I’m following.

  11. Sam says:

I need to show strength from Gods love and stop taking a selfish path of sin that does not offer any permanent solution to the anger and pain.
