Do This in Remembrance

For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11: 23-26

Remembering is a powerful tool. Today is a day that is set aside for our nation to remember the sacrifice of many in the service of our country. Many courageous individuals gave it all, and in memory of them, inspire courage of countless others. The power of a memorial is not limited to its past event; it casts a bright light into the future. Having a day set aside to remember is not only relevant and meaningful, but it is also a divine idea. The tool of remembrance was designed by the Creator of life itself.

Men need a reminder more often than they need instruction.

Jesus was the Master Teacher and used the tool of memory in powerful ways. Consider the night of Jesus’ arrest in the passage above. He knew full well the events that were to unfold and His subsequent death on a cross. Of all the things He could have done that evening with His disciples, He chose to establish an act of memorial. Taking communion, as many have experienced in a local church, was brilliantly laid out as a way to focus our minds on Christ. As you remember those in military service on this Memorial Day, praise God for His design of the memory tool.
