Enslaved Slaves

ENGLISH

Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? — Romans 6:16

We are all slaves of something.

Caffeine. News. Debt. Media. Work. Money. Phones. Gaming. Internet. You name it.

But what's interesting in this text is that Paul suggests there are only two categories of slavery — slavery to sin or slavery to righteousness. That's it. Notice there is no third option. There is no "free to whatever you want" option where we are not slaves. Where we have boundless freedom to do whatever ever want. Or is there? I think this is what is most insidious about sin. It sells on the appearance of boundless freedom. We sin thinking we can do whatever we want until we realize we have become slaves of our own vices. And these vices have now destroyed our lives and relationships to the point we reap the bondage of the enslavement to our freedom — a.k.a. sin and disobedience that results in death.

It's not until this point that we discover there is no such thing as freedom. Instead, the only true freedom is from sin found in slavery to the right master. A master who is righteous in all his ways and wants a righteous life for us — this master, of course, is God.

Today in that appearance of freedom, remember there is no such thing as "free" choices — it's a choice for obedience or a choice for disobedience. And remember, as you choose, you are choosing to enslave yourself to a master. And this, like all choices, begins with one choice. The choice to submit your life to the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Listen to these words of Joshua in Joshua 24:15, who makes this same point:

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lordchoose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

ASK THIS: Are you ready to make God your Lord and Savior today?

DO THIS: If so, write this in the comments below. "Today, I choose to submit my life to the good master Jesus Christ."

PRAY THIS: God, thank you for reducing me from slavery to this world and disobedience. I give my life freely to you.

PLAY THIS: No Longer Slaves.

  2. Elisha Davidson says:

Paul is addressing this epistle to the church in Rome, man has choice to respond to the lord or the world’s cosmos. The grace in salvation through faith has not our works, but Christ’s blood and ressurection from beginning and end, myself knowing he did for me what I could not do, and to continue in salvation is through the indwelling of the holy spirit, his yoke is peace, light, the truth, the way. Mine is under my feet by he who strengthens me.

  3. Dennis says:

I once was a slave to the enemy, it almost took my life. My choice is to serve and obey the one who gives us life.

  4. RP says:

Today, again, I chose to submit to the slavery of following Jesus. A slave to my undisciplined daily life must not continue!

  7. Eddie Ackerman says:

I said yes to the Lord as my Savior almost 20 years ago, but didn’t submit to the Lord as my Master until about 7 years ago, then was baptized about 5 years ago. Over the last 7 years, I have put up safety measures, mostly antivirus on my phone, tablet, and pc, to keep me FAR from sin, not toeing the line anymore. If any of you other men suffer from lust and self pleasure, do this, install antivirus and have SOMEONE ELSE, preferably a spouse or significant other that you are fully committed to, set the password and not tell you. This one small and simple step has helped me beyond what I could imagine, and it required submission to God and my wife. I can promise you men, this is NOT a decision you will regret if you choose to make it also.

  8. Jeff says:

Today, and everyday I choose to submit my life to the good master Jesus Christ. I can not do this all on my own. You have a plan for me- I submit myself to You!🙏

  9. Michael says:

I made Jesus my Savior a long time ago, but it was not until I understand the Lordship part and chose to submit and chose the One that I was going to serve I, then I began to understand and experience what true freedom is. There is more freedom in being a slave to righteousness then you will ever experience being a slave to sin. Choose and submit to righteousness today, you will not be disappointed.

  10. Steve George says:

I am a slave, servant but also a son of the only true God who through faith the sacrifice of son has set me free from slavery to sin! Abba, Father.
