And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.—2 Timothy 2:2
John Wooden, one of the rare men to ever be inducted into the hall of fame as both a player and a coach, once said something like this.
"Everything you have learned, you have learned from someone else."
I love this quote. It's both thought-provoking and laughable at the same time. Wooden stresses that while we might think we are legends in our own mind, that really nothing we have learned in this life has been learned independently of a relationship with another person. This suggests that we don't have original thoughts, even though we may think we came up with an idea completely independent of others.
Paul emphasizes a similar point in today's verse. He understands that what he has taught will die with him unless Timothy carries it ahead. In addition, he notes that Timothy must select faithful men to whom he can entrust this message. Thus, everything we have learned, we have learned from someone else.
But let's note the three imperatives of this charge. First, it's imperative to hear the right message. Second, it's imperative to identify the right men. Third, it's imperative to communicate the message rightly. All are necessary.
But now it's our turn. We must do something today to play a role in this long legacy. We must be the right person who shares the right message and identify the right people who will communicate the message rightly. In this way, we become a part of a long history of faithful teachers who have communicated the greatest story ever told—the story of a God who saves humanity.
ASK THIS: Which one of the three do you need to give attention to today? Being the right person, hearing the right message, or identifying the right people? (Share your choice in the comments below)
DO THIS: Act on your choice.
PRAY THIS: God, thank you for convicting me today and entrusting someone like me with the gospel story. Give me an opportunity today to advance your message. A message that you are writing on the hearts of all humanity.
PLAY THIS: Alan Jackson. Standing on the Promises.
