“Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:14-15
Joshua was a man of great conviction. As a young man, he accompanied Moses in a variety of situations. He saw firsthand what it was like to lead a nation, how to walk with God, and he was mentored by a man who would speak with God face to face and was considered the most humble man on earth. Imagine the kind of father Joshua was! Whether a leader of a nation or a head of a small family, it is important to understand that Fathers are leaders. Joshua gives a compelling example of how a father leads.
God must come first. This was both a spoken and written command, issued by this father. Notice how Joshua recollected past father’s and their leadership miscues. He knew just how important the leadership of a father was to a family, in either good or bad direction. There was no mistaking the power of a fatherly example. Joshua led the way declaring that he and his family would choose to follow God. Unmistakable, resolute in direction, strong in conviction. Be encouraged by this example and steadfast in your leadership as a man.
