Gaza: Desperate Offerings in Supernatural Events

These are the golden tumors that the Philistines returned as a guilt offering to the Lord: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron, and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both fortified cities and unwalled villages. — 1 Samuel 6:17-18

Before we dig into the text, it's essential to comprehend the gravity of the events that led up to it. In 1 Samuel 5, the Philistines had defeated the Israelites and captured the Ark of the Covenant. Believing that the God of Israel lived in the Ark, they placed it in the temple of Dagon, their god, as a symbol of superiority. But what followed was humbling. Their false god, Dagon, was found face down before the Ark and then decapitated and finally dismembered and on top of this, plagues, tumors, and widespread panic struck them, forcing them to acknowledge the might of the God of Israel whose Ark they had taken.

This wasn't just a hiccup for the Philistines but complete chaos. The Philistine cities, including Gaza, had each been tormented in turn. They tried relocating the Ark several times, but this only spread the agony. Finally, out of sheer desperation, the Philistines, who once thought their god was superior, were making golden offerings of tumors and mice to Yahweh, the God of Israel. It was an explicit admission of their guilt and a desperate attempt to find favor in God's sight.

I have always found it intriguing how God uses natural and supernatural events to make his divine power known to both his enemies and friends. This event exposed not only the arrogance of the Philistines but also the arrogance of the Nation of Israel. And I don't think it is wrong to pray that God would use events like this to expose the blatant, ungodly arrogance that is happening in Gaza today.

But remember, as you pray, this may also come to pass in your own life. Remember, we all have inclinations of arrogance. Sometimes, the vanity is so deep and unseen that we will try to shift the blame. But eventually, God will expose this using a natural and supernatural event to get our attention, too. And how we respond in this moment can reshape who we are and bring glory to already and always great God.

So, God, we ask in unison that you would make your name great in Gaza, Israel, and in our lives as well.

ASK THIS:

In what ways have you experienced or witnessed the exposure of hidden arrogance, either in your life or in the world around you? How did it lead to a moment of repentance or change?

What natural or supernatural events have gotten your attention and caused you to reevaluate your relationship with God? How did you respond?

DO THIS: Pray for natural and supernatural events in this life that drive mankind back to God.

PRAY THIS: Lord, expose the hidden arrogance in my heart and replace it with a spirit of humility and dependence on You. May Your name be glorified in every area of my life, just as Your power was made known to the Philistines and Israelites alike. Amen.

PLAY THIS: Glory Is Yours.

My personal breaking point with the repetitive sin of lust was when my wife walked in on me watching this “harmless” pornography and she was in the mood to satisfy this need I had in a natural and God-honoring way. Needless to say, we did not become one flesh that day, but I did realize that I was chasing after these women I would never meet or become one flesh with when I had my own beautiful wife who is almost always ready and willing to be that for me, assuming that the timing is right (no kids or other priorities that have to immediately be taken care of, etc.). Then I finally explained to her that I could NOT beat this repetitive sin on my own, so I installed antivirus software, set up the parental controls to the strictest settings (I can’t even go on ebay because it’s considered a gambling website) and she is the ONLY person that knows the password, to this day. This all happened about 8 years ago, but after the temptation of using the web to satisfy what my wife was supposed to be satisfying, I also had a real talk with her about WHY I needed her to step in. I was no longer looking to her to be my one and only wife and meet my sexual needs, I was looking to these other women, who are NOT my wife, and it was not strengthening our marriage. I don’t know if this advice is for everyone, but I know it does work and if you are also struggling with this repetitive sin, I do highly recommend this course of action. You will see immediate results and it will be a struggle at first to not immediately be able to have this desire fulfilled, on your command, but learning patience is not a bad thing either men.

Thanks for sharing brother. I too had to confess to my wife this same sin and she forgave me and we have been walking through it together for approximately the same amount of time. I think God for a godly woman in my life and for the forgiveness I find in Christ. Men, you can overcome this sin with Jesus!

Over and over again my mind decides that I can handle life. I can help, read that make, others get their life on track. I can see what needs done. Who needs to do what and how it is going to unfold neatly. Cue chaos. Heart ache. Crumbling of my plan. Resistance of even refusal of others to get on track. And resulting from it all if you look with an eternal eye and not a temporal one…. BEAUTY and WONDER. I often need and have been broken and beaten to get it through my thick head that I AM NOT IN CONTROL. I am not all that I sometimes think I am. ( or am told i am by the enemy but that is another subject) Perhaps some day I will remember the lesson and not have to go through the pain of reproof and correction.

Sometimes I think we are ‘perfecting the lesson’. Each time we are corrected by God we understand more deeply. We are given insight to help others that may have plunged deeper than we have but don’t have Holy Spirit to reveal to them the light in their darkness. Total perfection is not attainable here on earth. It awaits us in Heaven with Him. Until then we keep learning and helping others to see. Teach me oh Lord I pray.
