Get Honest With Jesus

So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. — John 4:48-50

When Jesus declared that the people, in general, needed signs and wonders, he was not trying to be condescending or dismissive to this official. He's attempting to get the crowd to reveal their true motivations. He wants people to be honest about what they want. And this man is honest about what he wants — healing for his son. And he is unashamed to admit it. But others in the crowd had impure motivations about his signs and wonders. They demanded them as proof to warrant their belief. But not this official. He wanted a miracle because it was his last hope. Nothing would save his son but belief in Jesus.

Two things I want you to notice here. First, are you being honest with Jesus? I mean, really honest. Because you know he knows your motivation, don't you? This means it's pointless to try to conceal your motives from him. So stop doing that. Stop acting like this crowd by trying to hide them to get what you want from him. That's just stupid. Second, reveal them to Jesus. That's what this official did. This was a man of great public stature who lowered himself to travel a two-day journey to get one thing—healing for his son. And he was determined to ask for it publically regardless of what others thought. So maybe today is the day you finally get honest with Jesus and tell him what you want.
