God Shows Up When People Are Vengeful

But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack on Paul and brought him before the tribunal, saying, “This man is persuading people to worship God contrary to the law.” But when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of wrongdoing or vicious crime, O Jews, I would have reason to accept your complaint. But since it is a matter of questions about words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves. I refuse to be a judge of these things.” And he drove them from the tribunal. And they all seized Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the tribunal. But Gallio paid no attention to any of this — Acts 18:12-17

So what’s happening here is Jewish leaders are failing to silence Paul, and because they perceive him to be a threat to their synagogue, they attempt a legal and political move. They conspire and bring Paul out to the Bema Seat, which was a place to bring legal cases in the city of Corinth. And just for fun, I put up a picture on the video today of the Bema Seat in Corinth because it still stands today as it did in 50 A.D. when Paul was brought there. You will notice a large thin blue marble stone between some partial columns on which a proconsul would stand to hear and judge public cases as people would congregate below him. But, as we discover, this plan to bring a religious matter to the Roman proconsul Gallio fails. It not only fails, but it also seems to backfire.

If we go back to yesterday’s text, you may remember the vision God gave Paul. In the vision, God said that Paul was to continue preaching, that he would not be harmed, and that God had many in this city who were his people. And again, as we see here, God is good on his word. But the only way Paul realizes this vision and God’s promise is by stepping into the challenging moments. He has to let come what may and let God’s word and vision be proven.

So today, what’s the challenge you need to address? I know today there is a challenge I need to address. And while I may want to avoid it — avoidance is just me taking the matter into my own hands. Would the challenge not be better left to the hands of God. So instead of avoiding your challenge today, why not give it to God. Then step into it, and as you do, let God deal with it. It may have an outcome you didn’t expect. And then you can give God glory for his handiwork in your life.

ASK THIS: What challenge do you need to address? (Share it below, and let a brother encourage you).

DO THIS: Give it to God and then step into it.

PRAY THIS: God, show up in the challenge I need to address today. Help me overcome.

    I have two.
First: To not give in to the temptation of repetitive sin.
Second: I’m tired of sitting by guys that swear non-stop, talk perverted, complain, and can be negative about stuff. I used to be one of those guys. Now I feel my attitude changing again, and I’m getting beat down by it. Yesterday I asked my supervisor if I can change work stations. I explained the situation and told him it was like putting a recovered alcoholic at the bar with drinks in front of him. I need to ask a couple guys if they would switch work stations. Praying that one of them will want to switch.

I need to address my financial situation today. I have overwhelming debt and I know God is my source and will help me through it.

I feel God is wanting me to start a men’s ministry, but oh how this is a challenge for me.
When I ask myself are you committed to the tasked?
    Do you have the time?
Do you have the help needed to pull this off?
When i think about these questions it’s a challenge, pray for me that God would direct in this matter.

    • Jack says:

Father, give Sheldon the answers to his questions. If You are leading him into a men’s ministry bring him together with the right partners and resources.

    • Trent says:

Instead of focusing on these questions I would challenge you to focus on “Lord, is this what you would have me to do?” If it is, he will provide the time and the help, and it will glorify Him. I am just certain of it.

Lord give Sheldon clarity in this matter of a men’s ministry. Give him a solid direction and then, I pray the pieces would fall into place for your will and way to be played out and glory brought to your name. Amen, and thank you in advance Father God

I had those same thoughts. It took about a year of God nudging me for me to finally give in. 2016 we started The League of Ordinary Gentleman with 4 people. Before Covid we had 2 groups . Go for it. I used Right Now Media Series 33 to get me started.
