Great Challenges Require Greater Character
Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. — 1 Timothy 4:12
I am sure that right here, Paul is well aware that Timothy would likely disqualify himself. After all, Paul asks Timothy to engage in some very challenging tasks. He invites him to correct deceitful doctrine, quiet the contention of powerful women, challenge men to spiritual action, and establish qualified church leaders. Honestly, this sounds overwhelming. I think even Elon Musk would be intimated. It sounds more complicated than a Twitter takeover.
But remember, Timothy is not some well-aged experienced leader who has been down this path before. He is still young compared to the people he has to confront and redirect. And Paul knows this. But Paul has a rebuttal to this minor complication — it is the consistency of Timothy's character. It's his talk, walk, and faith in Jesus. Anchored in this, Paul knows that Timothy might face impossible odds and get thrown out, rejected, beaten, and despised, but his character will remain intact, and it will tell the long story about who we are because of who we follow.
So if you are dealing with significant challenges today, can I encourage you to do something? Give more attention to your character. Be an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

Read through the Bible daily with Vince Miller.
Well yesterday I became a father, and it was a long stressful day. The hospital we were at, had to transfer us to different hospital that had a better NICU unit and rules and policy’s are different here, which is frustrating. I had to be reminded that I need to trust God and his plan for our family. Our little one continues to improve.
We are praying for this young one today!
Thanks Vince!
You bet Paul!
My challenges are pretty much the same as they have been for the last 14 years, being a father to my kids, despite their testing my patience, and me often failing to be patient. Luckily, I have realized, over the last 7-8 years, that I am carried on His shoulders, and I am ECSTATIC to be yoked to Him that does ALL the heavy lifting, including lifting me up when I am feeling down on myself. I also like to disqualify myself on spiritual maturity and age, so thanks for making that aspect PAINFULLY obvious Vince. I would not have grown nearly as much as I have without your daily devotionals to help guide me to be a better husband, father, and ambassador for Christ.
The music today was powerful!
God, prepare me and my character for the test before me.
Amen
When working on mechanical issues my character is tested and I fail but God has helped me because they don’t happen as often as they used to
Great reminder. All are called to lead – it’s time for us to step up and do it. Even when the task at hand appears overwhelming. Moses had an overwhelming charge, yet he fulfilled Gods calling.
I sort of wish that my 7 year old Grandson Andrew was a bit older, so he could understand today’s lesson. He’s got a great heart for the Lord already. We pray every day before he goes into school that he” is a light to someone that doesn’t know you”
This is Awesome! Way to go Grandpa!
Thank You.
