The Holy Spirit: He Dwells In You

Proverbs: A Strong Man Is Wise.

So many of you have had so many questions and intrigue about the Holy Spirit that I felt prompted to do a short series of teachings on the person of the Holy Spirit. So, beginning today for a few days, we are going to pause our series through the Gospel of John and focus on the topic of the Holy Spirit. (Don't worry, we are going to come back.)

Many of us have gone a lifetime without hearing a single message about the Holy Spirit. And Jesus in John has already made clear that the Spirit will be someone He will send to us to be our Helper and Advocate.

To live this life without ever recognizing this person of the Holy Spirit is foolishness. Most of us go about living as believers on our own power, our own ability, our own intuition, and never seek direction from the Holy Spirit. Thus, we get the limited results of a believer who lives life solely by their own power.

Here is the first thing we need to recognize about the Holy Spirit. He dwells in you and me. As we have already read in John 14:16-17:

And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

This is something unique to believers. Only professing believers are indwelled by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit is the same Spirit that was around at the beginning of time, at the conception of Jesus, present at the baptism of Jesus, and fell on believers at the ascension. This Spirit dwells not in a temple made by human hands but in the temple of the body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reads:

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

Today, if you are a believer who has never really become aware of the Spirit, I want you to begin today by intentionally becoming more aware of the Holy Spirit within you. Here is how we are going to start. Confess to Him that you have ignored Him and His indwelling in your life. Confess that you have ignored His voice, promptings, and nudges. Confess that you have been living a believing life with little recognition of Him in your life and that you are ready and want to be more aware of who He is.

That's the first step. Tomorrow, we will take another step.

ASK THIS:

  1. In what ways have you previously ignored or overlooked the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life? How can you start recognizing and relying on the Holy Spirit's guidance and power daily?
  2. What specific steps will you take to confess your past neglect of the Holy Spirit and invite Him more intentionally into your decisions, thoughts, and actions? How will this renewed focus on the Holy Spirit's indwelling influence your walk with Christ?

DO THIS: Confess that you have ignored the Holy Spirit and you are ready to listen to him.

PRAY THIS: Holy Spirit, I confess that I have often ignored Your presence and guidance in my life, relying on my own strength instead. Help me to become more aware of You, leaning into Your wisdom, power, and love so that I may glorify God in all I do. Amen.

PLAY THIS: Lord, I Need You.

God, please forgive me for ignoring the Holy Spirit that has indwelt in me since High School, when I first said yes to Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I did a LOT of my believing life with my own power only and have only started to recently course correct and grow closer to The Trinity in my life. God, thank You for the gifts You have bestowed upon me in this life and speak to me through the Holy Spirit when I need to course correct again and help me to acknowledge Him in everything I do. Amen.

I can’t fathom life without Holy Spirit! All my life I’ve been taught about, and been aware of His presence in my life. When Jesus left, He promised His Holy Spirit. Jesus sits at the Father’s right hand, interceeding for us. Holy Spirit is here, lifting us, working through us, comforting us.
I’m shocked to read that many aren’t taught of Him.
This will be an interesting week.
