All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were much afraid. And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel. And the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father’s house free in Israel.” And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 1 Samuel 17:24-26

David and Goliath is a classic story. There are elements of war, fear, courage, and great conflict. In the balance was an entire nation determined by the outcome of a one-on-one battle. The champion of one nation against the other, winner take all. There is a distinct longing in every man to be the hero, imagining himself as the one who throws the nation on his back and leads them to victory. As much as David is an underdog here, there is one hero-like characteristic that is rarely talked about. This very trait is uncommon, but any man at any time can deploy it.

A hero sees what everyone else sees, yet they do what no one does. Heroes take appropriate action.

David, like everyone else present, saw Goliath. The difference was David did something about it. This hero-like character trait is transferable to any man. No training necessary. You don’t need an extensive list of super powers. Any man at any time can act as David did. He understood the situation, God’s heart, and became God’s man by taking action.
