For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions. — 2 Timothy 4:3
This text is sobering for men like me who teach the Word. Every time I pick up the Scripture, I am reminded of the weight I bear in teaching it as the individual authors and God intended. And as I have gotten older, I have listened with greater precision to teachers who make these small diversions from what Paul calls "sound teaching." Some hearers will never pick up on these diversions. They will carelessly accept what they hear from these teachers based on how persuasively they might say it or how stylish they might be. But none of these things matter if the gospel they teach is not sound because it won't work.
In fact, some teachers maliciously teach unsound doctrine, knowing that it will meet with the passions of their audience. They do it to get butts in seats and bucks in wallets, but not the Bible into people's hearts and minds. They are fully aware that the Bible may reprove, rebuke, and exhort others (2 Timothy 4:2) and potentially drive them away from their church. They fear losing followers, so what they do is soften the edge of the truth to gain approval from man — not God. Thus they consciously exchange the passions of God for the passions of man to suit themselves.
So don't adjust the Bible to your liking. Let the Bible adjust you. And discover the life-giving power of a timeless book that has the power to change you in ways that will align you with God rather than the passions of man.
