It's Just About Paying Attention

ENGLISH

And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus.— Acts 8:34-35

So Philip has been following the Holy Spirit. As we talked about yesterday, he appears to be a little all over the place. But what I love about this guy is he's radically tuned into what God wants him to do and say. Therefore what we see happening is God gives him these prolific opportunities to communicate the good news of Jesus.

I have come to realize that I live a lot of my life by my own natural ability. I march out into my day and sometimes have little thought of what God might want me to do or say. I give only occasional attention to what the Spirit is saying in situations and encounters. Therefore, I live a life focused on my natural abilities and strength, getting only limited results. But Philp doesn't live this way. He trusts the Holy Spirit to give him direction, and thus, his attention is keen on what God is doing around him, which leads to profound spiritual results. Results that are enormously better than those of his natural abilities.

So today, let's choose to live by the Spirit's supernatural direction. Yes, you should go about your day. Do what you usually do. But instead, let's pay more attention. Begin today with a short prayer like this:

God, I invite your Spirit to give me direction in every moment of my day. Show me what to say and do in every interaction.

Then throughout your day, give more keen attention to what God is doing around you. Listen to each and every situation. Listen as you drive to work. Listen as you read and write emails. Listen at your daily meetings. Listen as you interact with clients. Listen as you eat lunch. Listen as you come home. Listen as you interact with your family. Just tune in. And then instead of responding like you always do. Respond as the Spirit direct and nudges. And let's see if God amplifies the results of our life. I bet you he does more than you could ever do on your own.

ASK THIS: Do you live more by natural or supernatural means?

DO THIS: Pay more attention to what God is doing and how the Spirit is leading today.

PRAY THIS: God, I invite your Spirit to give me direction in every moment of my day. Show me what to say and do in every interaction.

I unfortunately live more by natural. I definitely need to focus more on the Holy Spirit.

It’s good to know I am not alone. I do the exact same thing. Many times I have a hard time because I overthink and can’t sit patiently. Then I get confused about the voices in my head. Is it my voice and will or is it the Holy Spirit? As I’m debating this in my head I end up hesitating and miss opportunities.

brings to mind a different verse, lean not on our own understanding but on the understanding of God, which we can NEVER fully comprehend. as one christian comedian said, if I can understand God, than my God is too small, or worse, I could be God…

  4. David L. Trima says:

I march out into my day and sometimes have little thought of what God might want me to do or say. Vince brother, you’re human. There’s only a handful of people that don’t do this.

As Philip did, “Let’s walk in the Spirit .. let by the Spirit.. live by the Spirit” – Gal 5:25.
