Knowing God Is Eternal Life | John 17:2-3
Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. — John 17:2-3
We need to remember this entire chapter is a prayer. A prayer that Jesus spoke, that John happened to write down. With that in mind, the disciples listen in as Jesus declares a divine reality about his authority and purpose. We learn here his jurisdiction extends over all mankind. And his goal is to provide salvation so that some will know the one and only true God.
To know the Father is eternal life. "Know" is the Greek word "ginosko" which is knowing that goes beyond informational interchange. It is a knowing that is comprehensive and ongoing. It is active learning and growing in our understanding of God. It may begin with a moment of belief but continues to the end of our days, and only then is it fully realized when we enter our eternal home.
Jesus's prayer is that we will always be knowing God. That we will know God better today than we did yesterday. And that we will know him better tomorrow than we do today. So do one thing today: know the living God and his ever-increasing glory in this life.
- How does your understanding of the term "eternal life" change when you consider it as an ongoing, active process of knowing God rather than just a future destination?
- What practical steps can you take today to deepen your knowledge and understanding of God and experience His ever-increasing glory in your life?
DO THIS: Know the living God and his ever-increasing glory in this life.
PRAY THIS: Father, I pray that You grant me the wisdom and perseverance to continually seek a deeper knowledge of You, understanding that eternal life is found in an ongoing relationship with You. May I embrace each day as an opportunity to know You better and experience the ever-increasing glory of Your presence in my life. Amen.
