Stand Against

Scripture

And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. And he was teaching them and saying to them, "Is it not written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations'? But you have made it a den of robbers." And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching. And when evening came they went out of the city.—Mark 11:15-19

Devotional

As Jesus enters the temple, he does not do so with joy and excitement; but rage. It's one of those rare times we see Jesus provoked by injustice. He observes that men are preying on the religious needs of God-fearing men and women and their requirements to bring penance to God. And it's not unbelievers taking advantage of God's people, it's people from their own race and religious beliefs consciously and maliciously preying on the need for sacrifice. They were using a religious practice to pad their pockets. And I bet they concluded that this was fine through years of self-justification. Justifying their actions based on other people's needs, without any consideration of God.

When men stand up for injustice, great things happen. And I think God's man should stand up for injustice. But Jesus could confidently stand up for injustice because his character and heart were pure.

Often men will see moments of injustice and do nothing and say nothing, maybe because we lack confidence or the purity of character and heart. But for men to speak up and act out we must begin with doing some business within ourselves. To build godly confidence, we must be willing to address our issues together as men and brothers and drive out the sin from our own lives first. Before we come hard against others, we must go hard at ourselves and sin that lies hidden within us.

Today go hard against the injustice that lies within you—not others. Take a stand and prevent issues from entering the threshold of your temple. Prevent the justification of your action by taking a stand and addressing sin. And as you have victory, stand against these injustices and sins on behalf of other men who need your help as well.

This week we are focusing on the discipline of brotherhood.

Your Call To Act (C.T.A.) today is:

  • Pray: for 5-minutes, about one sin that has defeated you in the past and that you have also had victory over in your life by God's strength.
  • Share: below, how God has helped you.
  • Extra Credit: if there is a man you need to reach out to for help that has had victory over a sin that you need to come hard against—then reach out to him today.

“Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart; Test me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there is any wicked (ie lust) or hurtful (ie pride; anger; hate) way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.”
        ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭139:23-24‬ ‭AMP‬‬

        Isaiah 26:3-4
3 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You. 4 Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD Himself., is the Rock eternal.”

He has delivered us from the penalty of sin ; He has delivered us from the Power of sin.

He is delivering me, by His Strength within me, more & more, from the daily presence of lust of the eyes/flesh & pride, slowly but surely.

I will never be sinless, but I am truly sinning-less, due to His Almighty Power & Presence within me…

    • Ray says:

At the root of anger is fear. Get alone with God today and ask Him to reveal to you what you are afraid of. Then confess that to Him and ask Him what he wants you to know about it. Then receive His truth. Example; Let’s say I am fearful of finances. This causes me to get angry at my family for spending and waste. I go to God and ask Him to forgive me for my anger. He will forgive, but your anger is the fruit of the problem, your fear is the root of the problem. Instead, go to God. Say, “I’m afraid of my financial situation and that translates to I just don’t trust you, God, to provide for me. What do you want me to know about this?” Then listen to Him. I have done this often and always find peace. I hope this helps.

  23. Eric Jensen says:

Victory comes first in calling sin “sin”, confessing it before men, asking for forgiveness from God and any that you have hurt or been affected by your sin, and maintaining victory by identifying what made that sin desirable to me, and nailing that to the cross daily, and through memorizing scripture that will help in those times of temptation. I Cor 10:13 is a good one… “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.”

    1
  24. Kenneth McClatchey says:

I have to check myself concerning being judgemental towards non believers. I tend to place Kingdom standards upon the non believer only to see myself rationalizing my behavior when I embrace worldly standards.
The non believer is deceived and following the worldly norm but I don’t have the luxury of embracing the world to satisfy my flesh whether it be to justify my anger or simply speed up and run a red light because I was in a hurry.

So today Lord drive those thoughts (obviously from the Devil himself) out of my head and let me focus ONLY on YOU.

    2
  28. Bryce says:

With the Holy Spirit in my life I’ve been working to overcome the sin of being lazy or slacking in my prayer life. For a period of time I allowed myself to become distracted with busyness which led to less prayer which led to the slow fade into giving into the ways of the flesh.

  45. Wade says:

The only strategy that I have found successful in my own battle with sin is to love Jesus more than the sin. When I view temptation as a point in time when I must choose sin OR Jesus, I’ve had a better success rate at fighting off the temptation.

God got me thru the two that were the most evil many many years ago….just recently, as a matter of fact 180 days ago, I stopped drinking …though it was beneficial to me health wise, and relationship wise, I sure needed Gods hand to assist. I have only told a handful of folks what I just admitted….and that is huge for me. Just admitting this here is huge for me….

  50. a says:

The sin of porn is something that has recently creeped back into my life. I was able to overcome this issue strongly in the past year, but recently have found myself tempted and slightly giving in. I am still human and fail at times, but I try now everyday to set my eyes on Jesus and seek to please Him!

God, thank you for providing me with constant strength over the sin of addiction. Please provide me strength to overcome my other sins that weigh me down and let me do your work

  55. Tom Nichols says:

I get the whole “check the plank in your eye” first, but I think that idea is more readily applied to seeing other people do wrong in a general sense instead of an instance of injustice. It carries the idea of humility in approaching correction of another. But I view injustice as something more. I see it more as someone doing wrong to another and something we can make right and in some instances we should make it right immediately, regardless of our current spiritual health. If we saw something egregious happening to someone else, we would normally stop the behavior of the offender. So we should stop injustice if it is in our power and prudent. Yes, we should be careful to address the injustice within us so we are in the right frame of mind to do something and do it for the right reason. However, I find I am more inclined to justify not doing something in a situation because I am not spiritually pure/healthy at that particular moment. Don’t know if that makes sense. I just think more often than not, when I see an injustice I need to act on it instead of measuring my current spiritual condition to determine if I’m ready enough to act on it.

    2
  56. bob plantz says:

I think that sometimes I have issues with the way other people think about things. My way is obviously right. Sometimes, however, it is not even a sin thing but an opinion thing and when it is a sin thing I find myself being a little judgemental. I really need to cool my jets a bit and address those things in my life first before looking at others

  57. Eddie says:

I used to fulfill EVERY desire to satisfy my flesh by watching videos or looking at pictures of naked women that were DEFINITELY not my wife. I look back to my early days in my walk. Up until my angel arrived into my life I was a different person. How I treated others, what I believed in and what I thought was okay was tremendously different than I do today. I could say that I have grown older and wiser … which is true, but I became wiser through God’s insight and purpose as I gave myself to him to do so. 83. Walter says:

There are a couple of related sins that I have struggled with over the years. I became a pretty good thief over the years. God has delivered me from that and I believe that’s because I wanted to get that sin behind me. When Jesus asks the man would you be healed the willingness of the man to be whole becomes the focus. When I was convicted enough to pray for real deliverance God provided. I’m currently going through that same process with truthfulness. I’m prone to bend the truth or embellish to make a point or get what I want. What I have found is that both these sins are rooted in a lack of faith in God’s provision. He is doing a work in me and it is bearing fruit, thank you Lord
