Prayer's Power

Scripture

As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. And Peter remembered and said to him, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered." And Jesus answered them, "Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses."—Mark 11:20-25

Devotional

A couple of days ago, we discovered that Jesus cursed this little unfruitful tree. But today, we discover why he did it.

It was a lesson in faith, belief, and the power of prayer.

I think most men, most of the time, doubt God will do something we ask of him. We hesitate to ask because we hesitate to believe, and thus nothing happens. I have often wondered if this natural world and the "nature" of physical, material, and natural solutions prevents us from seeing the spiritual reality that surrounds us each day. Jesus has a heightened sense of this spiritual reality and turns this fig tree into a teachable moment for his men. He is imploring his men to look beyond the physical—to see the spiritual in these moments and the ones to come.

We will only see supernatural things if we surround ourselves with people who believe that God will do the supernatural. The natural world we see is only part of our reality. There is a power present to us that can and will move mountains, but we have to acknowledge the spiritual reality and ask with spiritual confidence. One thing that makes this easier is a Christian brother reminding us of this and reinforcing the nature of it.

Today increase your awareness of the spiritual reality that is at work around you. When you see it, say something, and then ask God to do something great. This may come in subtle forms, so keep watch.

This week we are focusing on the discipline of brotherhood.

Your Call To Act (C.T.A.) today is:

  • Pray: for 5-minutes, for increased spiritual awareness.
  • Look: for God and his working today. If you see something come back and say something in the comments below!

Had a conversation with a friend this morning at 5:15 before I listened to this. And what is weird is that I woke up this morning and said, “God bless me with the people who need my services today,” naturally never thought about what was occurring until this scripture, that conversation was meant to happen and now today, god continue to Bless me with people who need me, need my positivity and perspective, and need my services 🗣

I was reminded when I stepped outside this morning and heard the birds chirping in the trees of Matthew 6:26 and how God takes care of them and how much more he values me than them, and how much more he takes care of me…

  5. Todd Hansen says:

I’m thinking about what a blessing it is that we have any spiritual awareness at all — isn’t this right? We may share characteristics with other living creatures, but the awareness of things beyond our five senses is unique to humans and we all possess it, even those who would wish to believe we’re only animals. Paul says we can suppress the truth (Rom 1:18-19) — and pay the price for doing so — but that doesn’t change the truth one iota. He also reminds us that we only see this higher reality in a limited way for now (1 Cor 13:12) but that a day is coming when we’ll see in completeness what we see now in part. In that great day, what seems real to us now, will seen to have been a dream. God, we praise you for your voice calling us and pointing the way — give us new powers of perception to listen, believe, and act!

  6. Jim Butterfield says:

I will send our lent challenge group my recent chronicles of 12 blessings related to how God was at work in my daughter’s heart attack journey over the past year. God is at work in answer to prayer… we have lived that and am grateful for so much prayer that stood behind our family over the past year.

Cindy found out yesterday she will be losing her job the end of this month. Needless to say she was a little on edge yesterday to borderline crabby… : )
I prayed that God would give her peace – She came up from her office this morning and said my daily devotion said to be positive – she had the biggest smile on her face – God is good.

  9. Michael says:

I prayed today boldly that if any of our family’s struggles were due to demonic persecution, that he would flee, because the One in us is greater than the one in the world.

James 4:7-8 “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you”

God, thank for sending your only son to give his life that I might receive your grace of my short comings. The death of Christ and the resurrection from the dead is a celebration of living. That celebration is Easter …. Help me to better see Easters in all of my daily life and to acknowledge those Easters to those around me.

God is using this nation’s fear around the COVID-19 to draw people to Himself. Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Happened already at 8 am! We went to our local beef and chicken farm for eggs and meat…may not sound spiritual, but… being there, feeling nature, the animals, the rolling hills and farmland…. it IS spiritual. To see where God provides for us …the farmers who toil 24/7 to bring healthy farm fresh food to our tables…yeah, to me it is spiritual. Stop and smell the fresh air….give thanks….

  23. Mike says:

I believe in the power of prayer and I pray every day. The main thing I pray for is for my sons to be able to break away from their addictions of many years. At some point I have just started saying, concerning this subject, “Dear God your will be done” as it seems my prayers are having no affect. So, should I just think that God has a “plan” and whatever I say to Him really may not matter because He is not going to change His plan?

    1
    • Nick Hall says:

God is sovereign, he does have a plan with this virus and his will will be done no matter what we want. Just keep praying brother!

    • Kevin V says:

Mike, I understand your feelings. I have been praying for my brother for over 20 years to come to Christ and he has not yet. I often wonder if it will ever happen. When these doubts enter my mind I think of Abraham waiting on God to give him a son – and he was 100 years old before it happened! God is faithful and we need to be faithful also. Keep praying (James 5:16b).

  24. Wade says:

I see God at work in this time through technology. The amount of quality Christian content on the internet, people connecting through Zoom, FaceTime, texting, etc…. I zoomed with my 7th grade guys small group and it was even more productive than meeting face to face. Boys praying for each other, reading scripture, talking about their concern for their grandparents,… It was so good!

    5
  25. Cory Bullock says:

This is super important right now for me to practice as with all the distractions going on around me I am not tuned into looking for the good in the world that God does everyday and I think this would be so awesome for myself and everyone else if we all tried to focus on doing this.

  26. Jason says:

Lord, You have given me a heart of worship today and I thank you for that. I ask for more spiritual discernment and wisdom today. Give me Your eyes to see, Your ears to hear and Your heart to love. In Jesus name, amen.

God’s unexpected favor and blessings are all around me and present in my life if I just take the time to recognize them. Today I am grateful that I still get to go to work up at the church and get out of my house at a time when so many can’t. Thank you God for your provision of this small blessing in my life.

  30. Tom says:

I agree 100%. I find myself settling for things instead of asking God for what he wants and what I want. I struggle to really believe that God has my best interest sometimes. Maybe because I can only see the physical.

  32. Dave Benson says:

This morning I had a spiritual brother remind me of the light shining in our hearts when he shared 2 Cor 4:7-11. Paul didn’t focus on his trials and surroundings, but on the treasure of Jesus in our jars of clay. In times like these, we are to let Him shine through us to those around us. It’s amazing how God always uses a brother to lift us up when we are feeling weak. Love it!

    • David Steinquist says:

Today I’m praying about two specific things. One work related and one on a personal level. I will come back and post as answers arrive. Blessings, Men.

At one point I thought that nothing would heal my marriage. Since then I have seen God work in subtle ways and in big ways to heal that relationship. This is just one of the millions of ways God has worked miraculously in my life.

My wife and I usually walk every day, with Corona we now have others of our Family who join us and one constant Is my Son Ben. We have rather deep meaning full conversations! Bens passion and Heart For God brings pure joy to my heart. His knowledge of the Bible is growing mine. If you could have been a bee buzzing behind us you would understand why i share! God is GREAT and there is young generation that will Stand for Him!

We took dinner to our pastor and left it on her porch. Just to see her smile and blowing kisses to us, the joy in her face was a blessing for my family and I.

  50. Ted says:

It seems so hard to see God working good in our world wide situation we are in. BUT, I don’t think that so many people would be stepping up to help strangers if this wasn’t happening.
I need to open my eyes more to see who needs help.

  51. G says:

I find God working in these strange times by guiding me through my job search and academic pursuit. As I prayed to him before my job interview this morning I felt peace and calmness, and he was there with me during the interview. He is here in this process with me, and is going to lead me to the next stage of my life and put me where He wants me to be. I am confident more than ever as my anxiety is at an all-time low during this process. He has brought me peace and I am ready for him to lead me where I am called. I also see God working in the lives of people bringing them together outside and restoring family time.

This morning I stumbled across a message , it’s theme Trust God. I am currently working on a project proposal . Early this morning God Himself highlighted His ever present hope.

  56. Darrell says:

  57. Jay Wegiel says:

Just seeing families out walking together and hearing of folks staying home and spending time together playing games, eating togther, building puzzles, going for joy rides….. It’s kind of like a throwback to the time before the country started throwing God out of everything and everywhere.

My friend was in a bad motorcycle accident on Monday. He was in ICU for three days with little improvement. Yesterday morning he had made a huge improvement and he ended up going home yesterday. 65. Doug says:

I prayed Thursday morning, asking to see God do the supernatural. 70. Ross says:

I pray, Lord, for more spiritual awareness. Help me to discern the spiritual in my daily walk. Lord, this will help me hear more from you, and I very much want that!
In this time of this pandemic, I do see you working in and through various individuals and ministries to provide encouragement, comfort and hope, and I sense we need to get on our knees as a nation, to ask for your forgiveness for our sins, turn from our wicked ways so that our prayers will be heard in heaven, and , in your mercy, you would bring healing. Help us to be lights in this dark time!

  71. Al says:

I’ve been blown away to see so many people being kind to on another , I hate the fact it is taking a world pandemic for this to happen but the stories of love and peoples graciousness, it is showing Gods image.

  72. Denny says:

This has been so difficult for me. I was very involved in a church and saw God working many times. When a new pastor arrived I felt God was calling me out of that church. That was two years ago. I have been attending a different church and I have tried to get involved in several ministries but I feel like I have not heard or seen God in a long time. I desperately miss the joy that comes from serving others but I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be doing. I pray for wisdom and guidance on what I should do.
