Run With Abandon

Scripture

And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.—Mark 10:13-16

Devotional

I love that Jesus has this protective response. Can't you see a group of reckless kids being brought to Jesus and even running at him? Yet concurrently, there is this defensive line of adults who think kids are above God's pay grade. But Jesus, instead of being a primadonna, has a harsh word for those who are wrongly protective and who are missing out on child-like abandonment.

Growing up should never result in us outgrowing specific attributes. Children can be: kind, genuine, trustworthy, reliant, simple, spirited, and caring. In adulthood, we sometimes "outgrow" these powerful and beneficial attributes when they are qualities Jesus said we must have to receive the Kingdom of God. Unless we are attentive, we will soon become everything that a child is not and lose that reckless abandon, becoming only rationally cautious. So today, be a little reckless, run to God with something. Come to him with a request that is beyond your reach. Ask for something a little crazy and unreasonable. Be irrational and run with abandon into the arms of a God who will not reject you.

This week we are focusing on the discipline of prayer.

Your Call To Act (C.T.A.) today is:

  • Pray: for 5-minutes and ask God for something unreasonable today. If you have trouble coming up with something consider items in the 5-F Categories: faith, family, friendships, finances, and fitness.
  • Share: below that crazy thing you are praying about.

Very fitting passage for the times we’re in right now! When a child is troubled and faces disruption they run to a parent where they feel secure. May this disruption we’re all facing cause us to run to our Father for the security only He can provide! So my ask today is in the faith category. Father, help me to put my trust in you alone!

  53. Pastor Mark says:

    Great thoughts, Vince!

I think one of the most common instances of becoming “rationally cautious” is a loss of being “reliant”: as we grow up, we seek independence and self-sufficiency from our parents/guardians. Unfortunately, there also seems to be a corresponding loss of reliance on our heavenly Father!

Crazy prayer for today: Lord, rather than helping our church merely sustain and weather the difficulties of a world struck low by the pandemic, may our church flourish and our witness SHINE, according to your good will!

  59. Ross Peterson says:

Good points, mark. Asking God for radical change and transformation does not something Western Christians are used to it seems. Matt Chandler calls it the plausibility structure. We overthink rationally instead of relying on the holy Spirit. Christians in Southeast Asia for instance are very open to the holy Spirit making huge changes is there a culture allows for this possibility more so than ours.
Anyway, my radical prayer for the day is hundreds of millions of new Believers on the other end of this virus crisis. When Church buildings are empty what a great time to show the world that the Church is NOT the building!

  60. Steve says:

  102. John Wilson says:

It’s kind hard to pray with reckless abandon like a child.

If I were a kid I’d want things to be fun, safe, and comfortable. And I pray for that for all of us in this troubling time the world is going thru.

There is so much turmoil, upheaval, and isolation in the world right now. For me to ask for peace, the end of the virus, and things to get back to normal seems like a huge and crazy ask, so thats what I prayed for.

Family means so much to me. I ask God to bless my family from the oldest to the youngest. I ask that He covers them with his blood and allow no harm or danger to enter their life. Use me, God, to teach them your word and your love.

  113. Walter says:

I ask for the free and open spirit that I need to come to God seeking even the wildest thing. There’s a stumbling block or I don’t have a cry for something I think God won’t do. There is a person I know who has hurt my family and I deeply, my heart says pray for their salvation, my mind rebels against it. I will follow the heart of love and pray that He would save them, which seems beyond any sense of reality.
