Run With Abandon
And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.—Mark 10:13-16
I love that Jesus has this protective response. Can't you see a group of reckless kids being brought to Jesus and even running at him? Yet concurrently, there is this defensive line of adults who think kids are above God's pay grade. But Jesus, instead of being a primadonna, has a harsh word for those who are wrongly protective and who are missing out on child-like abandonment.
Growing up should never result in us outgrowing specific attributes. Children can be: kind, genuine, trustworthy, reliant, simple, spirited, and caring. In adulthood, we sometimes "outgrow" these powerful and beneficial attributes when they are qualities Jesus said we must have to receive the Kingdom of God. Unless we are attentive, we will soon become everything that a child is not and lose that reckless abandon, becoming only rationally cautious. So today, be a little reckless, run to God with something. Come to him with a request that is beyond your reach. Ask for something a little crazy and unreasonable. Be irrational and run with abandon into the arms of a God who will not reject you.
This week we are focusing on the discipline of prayer.
Your Call To Act (C.T.A.) today is:
- Pray: for 5-minutes and ask God for something unreasonable today. If you have trouble coming up with something consider items in the 5-F Categories: faith, family, friendships, finances, and fitness.
- Share: below that crazy thing you are praying about.
