In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. John 1:1-9

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

I am somewhat of a flashlight collector. Early on I learned how handy a headlamp could be. Ice fishing in the dark can be a challenge if you have to hold a flashlight. Want to change the way you work under the car or in a basement crawlspace? Just add a light that doesn’t require holding something. Light changes the game in both hobbies and work in a man’s life. Now think about how light affects a man spiritually. You can get to work with clarity and purpose if you have the right light.

Jesus came as that light. His advent not only brought salvation to all men, but it also brought the kind of empowerment a good light offers a task. No longer do we have to flounder spiritually. Picking up the light, Jesus Christ, is a powerful gift to take hold of. He commissioned us to carry His light into the dark, passing it on to other men.
