Live With Eternity In View

Too often I meet people who live life with a myopic perspective. This is just another way to say we may be a little shortsighted. It may not be that we don't see correctly but that we don't see completely. It's as if we recognize what's right in front of us but cannot see with greater perspective given the distractions and seductions of life.

Stretching Our Perspective
Here's something to consider. We usually think of life as the 60-90 years a great portion of us will enjoy. If that is our view of life, then we might be a little shortsighted since life does not find its end when our physical life is done - there is an eternity that stretches beyond this. Eternity never ends - thus its name - it's forever. Therefore, the 60-90 years we live on this earth are but a moment in light of eternity. This means that if we are going to live with a long view, we must live with eternity in sight and make decisions with that in mind.

The Apostle Paul makes this point in 1 Corinthians 3:12-15. "Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire."

There is a day coming when God will test the view we've had of life which will be manifest by the work we have done. If we have lived life in light of eternity our work will withstand the heat. If not, it will suffer consequences. Thus, the question becomes, how am I living? Am I making choices given the moment or in view of eternity?

Questions To Consider
These are the kinds of questions that can help us live with eternity in view:

  • How am I using my God-given gifts to contribute to God's work?
  • Am I investing my resources in His work?
  • Am in involved in the lives of others to help them find and grow in Jesus?
  • Do I desire to follow Him closely and obey him fully?
  • Is there an area in my life I know He wants me to address?
  • Am I regularly in His Word to understand His ways and in prayer to open my heart to Him?
  • What do I want to leave behind me when I am gone?
  • Living in light of eternity is keeping the long view in mind. Remember, our lives here are merely an eyeblink in the big picture.
