Lose Your Life

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?  For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” Matthew 16:24-28

I often judge the value of something based on what it will cost me. When making a decision, financial or otherwise, I’m asking myself a question every man asks: is it worth it. That is a value question I wrestle with quite often, especially with my faith. This decision-making process can often be unconscious, but don’t let it be. Put yourself in the shoes of the disciples hearing Jesus in the passage above.

If I could read minds, I would wager that those men are asking if the value of following Jesus outweighs the cost of one’s own life. The disciples voted with their feet, as these men did give their life up as a result of following Jesus. They said that there was more value in being a disciple than there was in this earthly life. Each man should ask himself how much value he places on following Christ. The most accurate answer is reflected not in what you think, but in what you do.

DO THIS TODAY: Demonstrate with an action the value you place on Jesus.
