Make Much Of The Right One

ENGLISH

Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you,
for God is greater than man. — Job 33:12

This one verse sums up the core issue with all sin. When we sin, we do so because we have made more of ourselves and less of God. And Elihu claims that Job has done just that somewhere in this day — made too much of himself.

But remember, before this day, scripture is clear that through all the events of his suffering, "Job did not sin or charge God with wrong." (Job 1:22) Add to this that God proclaimed that Satan acted against Job "without reason." (Job 2:3) This infers that something devious has happened during this conversation with the three friends. And if you go back a read, you will see signs that Job is making a little too much of himself. And it sounds like Elihu has identified it. In fact, he is going to reference specific statements of Job as his evidence and proof.

I don't know about you, but I sense this at work in my life all the time. That sometimes, while sin can be obvious most of the time, it's not. It's just me making a little too much of myself. It's me making too much of my abilities, accomplishments, and adventures to others. Too much of my experience, efforts, and energies online. It's too much of me in what I think, say, and do. And this is what is so insidious and devious about sin — its beginnings are not so obvious. It's just me making a little too much of me. And you making a little too much of you.

So today, take some time to assess this. Ask yourself, "Self, where am I too focused on me?" And then, before it gets out of hand, make a little less of yourself and a little more of God.

ASK THIS: Where in your life are you too focused on yourself? (Share this in the comments below)

DO THIS: Make a little less of yourself in this area.

PRAY THIS: God, be greater in my life today.

PLAY THIS: Greater.

  1. Eddie Ackerman says:

sin is insidious, I can’t think of any areas of my life where I am being selfish currently, but I do remember MANY times when I have, and I am sure there are still areas I am blind to today. God, in the words of King David, create in me a clean heart. Amen.

Sometime on my abilities, gifts and talents. my prayer is that God would hide me behind the cross of Christ.

  3. Dennis James says:

I have been really taking a self inventory and looking at things I need to change and areas I need to improve upon. One of the scriptures that I am focused on is John 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

  4. Gary says:

My thoughts are almost always about me, how can I pleasure myself. I will think about how to help others today.
