The God Who Leaves Men Speechless

And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time. β€” Luke 1:20

Have you ever been genuinely speechless? I mean, mouth dropping, out of breath, bite your tongue out of words. I have a few times in my life. But not precisely like Zechariah. He was made mute because of his unbelief.

So here's the backstory.

Zechariah was one of many priests who served in the temple just before the birth of Jesus. He was married to a woman named Elizabeth, and they were known for being righteous. And one day, when Zechariah was selected to serve in the Temple, an angel appeared to him. The angel's name was Gabriel, and he told him his wife would have a son. A son by natural conception and birth. But two issues made this improbable for Zechariah. Elizabeth was old in years and barren her whole life. Zechariah saw no possibility of this coming true even though God sent a messenger angel to him. And because of his unbelief, God struck him mute. He remained silent until the naming of birth and naming of the child who was to be called John. Their child would be John, a prophet who proclaimed the way for Jesus, the Lord.

I think it is just like God to provide in such an iconic way. From a mute man and barren woman would come the prophet who would proclaim the message of the Lord. That's just like God, always doing jaw-dropping, improbable, and speechless things.

ASK THIS: What events in this life have left you speechless?

DO THIS: Share it below.

PRAY THIS: God, I stand in awe of your greatness. You leave me speechless.

God providing the means for my 2 kids to attend a Christian University/College!
There are so many God encounters that are truly miraculous because I know nothing is by chance and God is always working and doing things each day that I need to take note and praise him for intervening.

Making almost a complete recovery from being near deaths door in 2019. Gods not done with me yet.

Vince, you must have had some fun with this devotion. Plenty of puns. It’s good to laugh a little this early in the morning.
