Let Me Tell You About My Jesus

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. — John 1:1

So the phrase "In the beginning" would have connected with a Jewish audience. But the word "Word," clearly capitalized in your Bible and repeated three times in this verse, is a title that would have connected with a Greek audience. Because the Greek word for "Word" was "Logos." And Logos meant something significant to Greek philosophers. It referred to an abstract principle of divine reason and being revealed to humanity. It was similar in thought to our popular discussions in philosophy about Intelligent Design and the possibility of an Intelligent Designer. And so John takes this popular word and concept and connects it to the one who is divine reason — Jesus.

I love what John does here because it is both simple and genius. John sees something others want to see but don't see and makes the connection. He uses everyday language and man's search for meaning and connects it to the only thing that makes sense — Jesus.

And this is one of our daily duties as followers. It's to look out at life and see with redeemed minds the connections that others have trouble making and point them to the only reason that makes sense. And while some want to dismiss the connections we make as mere luck or coincidence, they are not. Sometimes people may even characterize these connections we make in a negative sense by dubbing it evangelism or proselytizing, but it's more than that. It's helping others make the connections they are having trouble making so they can see how the divine is trying to connect with mankind.

So don't be silent today. If you see a connection to the Gospel and Jesus, say something. It might be the Word that they need.

ASK THIS: Do you see a connection someone else fails to see?

DO THIS: Say something about Jesus.

PRAY THIS: God, first help me see the connections others fail to make. Second, could you give me the courage to say something when I do?

PLAY THIS: My Jesus.

Amen

The same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives inside of me. I am a new creation in Christ Jesus. Old things are passed away and all things are new. Thank you Father for my Jesus.
