Never Deserted

ENGLISH

At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. — 2 Timothy 4:16-17

We have all experienced abandonment and know the feelings associated with it. A few times in life, I have felt the loneliness that comes from being left out. Intentional or not, it hurts. When it happens with enough frequency or within significant relationships, the pain may even linger because the issues go unaddressed. And sometimes, in this pain, we live in bitter bondage that keeps us tethered to the past. And we must learn to let this go, which is what Paul is modeling here.

But to let it go, we must find a relationship that is worth tethering to. A trustworthy person. A person who will not abandon us. A person who looks beyond our sin and shortcomings. And Paul mentions a shortlist of these people in words surrounding this text. But the one that he stands with now is the one who always stood by him the Lord.

If you feel deserted and lonely today, try letting go of the bitter bondage to past issues and people. Tether yourself to the Lord. May his commitment to you strengthen you. And then tell others who are deserted just like you, the story of a God never abandons but came to seek and save the deserted.

ASK THIS: How has God been faithful to you?

DO THIS: Tell others how God has been faithful to you in the comments below. (Remember, this could help another lonely soul today.)

PRAY THIS: God, make your presence known to me today. Help me to let go of past hurts and hang-ups and tether me to your love, forgiveness, and grace.

PLAY THIS: I Am Not Alone.

When I voluntarily entered a church for the first in my life, a month later of going to church I eventually got overwhelmed by the depth that Christianity brought; so I left.

6 months later when I was jobless, hopeless and suicidal. All alone in my parent’s basement, I felt compelled to return to church to see how they and maybe even God could help me.

When I returned, I got so much more than I bargained for when I was covered in God’s love, grace, mercy, goodness and Him sending His one true son to taste death for us. Even with my initial abandonment, God still was planning to chase me down and carry home, He still does with every sin and mistake I make today.

God has healed my body and kept me alive. He has answered my prayers for the salvation of my children. He has given me good Godly men in in my life who hold me accountable, guide and instruct, encourage and pray for me. I can look back over my life and see how God has blessed and just kept me.

The first time I said yes to Jesus as Lord, I was 16. Then my mom got divorced and we moved halfway across the country and I started to pull away from God. Then I joined the military and my addiction to pornography became acceptable, so that was running rampant in my life, then I met my future wife and got married. When I got out of the military I gained a lot of weight because I was focused on feeding my body and soul with food. About 7 years ago, we moved from an apartment to a house and started going back to church. At the first sermon, I rededicated my life to God and reaffirmed my yes to Jesus as Lord. about a year later I was baptized as a believer, which I didn’t even know I was supposed to do until I started going back to church. In this entire span of time, 12 years, God never gave up on me and kept putting people in my life that reminded me of my first mentor from Colorado, who was the one taking me to church every Sunday, my next door neighbor Vince (not Miller), God rest his soul, who was the catalyst to the first time I said Yes to Jesus as Lord. While I was not following god, He was following me and pursued me until I had no more excuses. Thank You God for leaving the 99 and pursuing me until I was properly found.

God has always been with me even when the closest person in my life, my wife, was not. She is human, God is not.

Worked as a Fed PO for 16 years until I was arrested for marijuana at age 40. Lifetime of addiction comes out in a most humiliating and shameful way. Also had 3 young children. Gave myself to the Lord and good things started happening almost immedietly. Neighbor stopped by and offered me a job milking cows for $10/hr. Things just took off from there. 20 years later I am head administrator for a human services organization doing Gods work. The secrets which kept me in bondage for so long are now freely shared with others to offer hope. Always took Mathew 6:33 to heart. Amen brothers.

Day 35 in the nightmare with my co-writer. I feel that the tides have shifted in my favor. I have prayed for the other guy and not cursed him. I feel God is working behind the scenes but the final outcome has yet to come.

I once lost a job because of my own inappropriate action. I had worked at this job for over 20 years. I was devastated. The Lord did not abandon me. I told a good friend about my situation. He told me about a job opening at his work. I had never done this type of work before, but my buddy encouraged me to apply anyway. I went from being ashamed and feeling worthless, to having a new job within a months time. God was intervening for me. This all happened before I was a believer. Thank you Jesus for always providing for me and my family!

Over 7 years ago I prayed to God to just get me through the day and I would never drink again. I have been sober ever since and the urge is almost nonexistent. Since that day God has slowly brought me back to Him. Until recently I never thanked God much for my sobriety, but now I’m working on doing it daily. I said the urge was almost nonexistent because I believe that is His constant reminder that I will always need Him and I can’t do it on my own.

  9. Chad Husted says:

“But to let it go, we must find a relationship that is worth tethering to.” That friend is Jesus.
Thank you Jesus for being the friend I can always count on. Always with me and for and IN me. My advocate, encourager, King, and Savior!

  10. Rich Thomas says:

Through all the medical issues with my daughter, God has shown himself faithful to me and my family.

  11. Ed says:

When he gave his life for ours that took care of his faithfulness for us for eternity… sometimes we see his provision when we cease to strive on our own and yield to his hand. One of the few times I’ve done this was when I was part of the management team in a commercial bakery working 70 plus hours a week on salary in an extremely hostile environment where bullying and yelling at employees was encouraged. I was doing everything I could to find a similar paying job somewhere else before I collapsed physically and mentally. The day after I prayed “god, if this is where you want me to stay, grant me the strength to shine for you here and endure these hours and conditions and protect my family” …. the next day I got a call from someone offering me the job I am still in today… that was 13 years ago

Just sitting here thinking and I realized that every time something major was going on in my life the Lord always had the perfect pastor, mentor or brother in place to lead me through it!

God has promised he will ever leave me or abandon me. I see and feel it in my life each day in sometimes little things and sometimes bigger things.
Yesterday I was mowing my lawn and when I was almost done my mower stopped working. I looked and 2 bolts were missing, I was able to finish the mowing by placing one bolt that was not the correct size in one frame support.
I pushed my mower onto my driveway to look what was needed to repair it and my neighbor who was out for his walk stopped to say hi. He noticed what I was doing and said he had a mower similar to mine that had quit working, he said he would go to his shed and push it over and I could keep it for parts.
At the very moment I needed it this mower was identical to mine and I was able to repair Mine correctly im just a few minutes. It’s seems impossible that this could happen but I know that nothing is impossible with God. He has blessed me in so many ways from things like fixing a lawn mower to saving my sons life.

Way too many times to list all, so here is one. I was going through a period of temporary job after temporary job. Work 2 month, 3 day, a week, etc…. Then a period of 4+ months of no income. I had no savings, no resources. Living was week to week, day to day. I remember looking in the pantry and all that was in there was a box of spaghetti. I said, “Lord, thanks for this plain spaghetti I get to eat today”. I chose in that time to not say anything to anyone. I told Father that He was a big enough God to help me, that my prayers were enough. The next day a friend called me and mentioned that he seen my car in the driveway everyday. I then told him the story. A few hours later there was a knock at the door. There he was with 2 grocery bags of food. A few hours later another friend came with 4 bags of food, and these guys did not talk to each other! I remember in that time looking for loose change, going to the gas station and getting $1.63 in gas so I could go to a job interview. A few days a friend called and asked if I had room in my trunk. I said yes and later he brought a bunch of copper wire he had stripped (he worked as an electrician). He told me were to take it and what to say it was. I got about $260.
My point is, “But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me.” He was faithful, and the revelation that came in that time of reading scripture is priceless to me.
I hope this brings peace, hope, faith, in the righteousness that is in Christ Jesus to someone today. Shalom my brothers!
