Preach It

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. — 2 Timothy 4:1-2

The tone here is strong. It feels like a pep talk before a big game. I kinda imagine Paul grabbing Timothy by the face mask as he declares, "My son, I charge you by God."  So if Timothy wasn't paying attention, he is now. And the charge the coach gives him is to "preach the word" in any and every circumstance. It's a charge to preach it and let it reprove, rebuke, and exhort, but to preach it patiently.

I love this moment in this letter because it's inspiring. It inspires me to carry on. It inspires me to be faithful. And it inspires me to keep preaching the good news in a world of bad news.

I sometimes wonder if anything I am doing or saying is making any difference in this world. And then, once in a while, I get that all-so-important affirmation. It could be an affirmation from my wife, one of my children, or a friend. But this affirmation is powerful. It helps me take another step and to keep moving forward.

So today, maybe you need this affirmation. You might need to hear the echo of Paul's charge in your life. Listen to him as he says to you — "I charge you. Don't quit. Don't back down. Keep the faith. And preach it." Even more, I charge you to pass on this same affirmation to someone you know who needs to keep pressing on in faith today.

ASK THIS: Who do you need to affirm?

DO THIS: Affirm them in their faith and preach it to them. (Share who you will affirm in the comment section below.)

PRAY THIS: God, thanks for giving my voice. May I use it to preach good news to those who need it. And may my affirmation be a spiritual gift to them that helps them carry on.

PLAY THIS: Do it Again.

Hey Vince, we all need encouragement and prayer. I just want to thank you for being here every day and thank you also for your most resent Lent Challenge. As an accountability measure, I invited maybe 30 guys to join in a daily 15 minute morning prayer time at 6:00 am as we went through the Challenge. 6:00 am is pretty early, but two guys did join me and the three of us met every day of the Challenge . I can’t tell you enough what a blessing that was. In fact, the blessing continues. After the Challenge was over, we decided to keep on meeting every morning.
Oops! Gotta go the meeting is about to start.
    Blessings, Chuck
