Pushed To The Limits

ENGLISH

And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life." — Job 2:6

At first, we may read this divine invitation as a little disturbing. You're probably considering the same question that I instantly ask, which is, "Why is God allowing Satan to torment Job?" Because as we read ahead, we discover that Job is about to be stricken boils from the top of his head to the bottom of his feet. So it's an honest question.

But here's a small caveat. Consider this.

If we both trust the one pushing us to our limits and understand the purpose behind the pain, are we compelled to ask the same question the same way? Are we?

For example, when a trusted coach pushes us to train harder so that we can perform better against an opponent, are we compelled to ask the question, "Why are they tormenting me?" Now maybe. But if we train hard under that coach and he leads us to a victory, we make two discoveries. First, we discover a new level of trust and connection with our coach. Second, we discover that our coach had a plan and purpose in the pain. And afterward, all the "torment" is worth it.

So in Job's situation, if we knew that this trial would draw him closer to God and be would be used to cleanse him from self-righteousness — while simultaneously using a mortal man to defeat Satan and becoming one of the great stories of suffering and victory of all time — would you then ask the same question the same way? Maybe, but now you have a lot of perspective.

Maybe the better question is this — "Am I willing to suffer so that I might know God and his purposes in my life?"

Take a few moments to consider this question today. And if you happen to be right in the middle of a trial, try to identify what God is teaching you about him or his purposes and share it in the comments below so that I can be praying for you.

ASK THIS: What has God taught you, or is God currently teaching you through the trial(s)? (Share this in the comments below).

DO THIS: Ask the right question. "Am I willing to suffer so that I might know God and his purposes in my life?"

PRAY THIS: God, I am challenged by my trial today. It is consuming my mental, emotional, and physical energy. Please reveal your purpose and plan to me. Please give me a sight of the end. Please give me the endurance and strength to hang on. I pray you will be victorious over the enemy in my life, and may your name be glorified in me!

PLAY THIS: It Is Well.

I’m on day 129 of being separated from my wife. It’s been a hard long road, full of suffering and incredible pain. But the Lord has drawn me nearer to Him. I’ve learned to trust Him – no matter how hard – and just let go. Miracles – I mean miracles – are happening. Praise Jesus.

My trial is my middle child. She is consistently not engaging in family activities will not do her daily chores and always thinks we should be having a party. She is only 9. I’m not sure what got is teaching me but I’m praying I learn soon.

I have been pushed beyond where i ever thought I would be. This devotion is very timely – Thank you. Long story made short here – I thought I had my dream job (would help my family tremendously) only to have it crushed right before signing on the dotted line. This hurt like nothing I have had before – I felt like a total disappointment to my family – the level of emotional and mental stress of this has been overwhelming. I am strong and I know I will overcome this, however, sometimes you just need these reminders – God is in control, and has something in mind for you! This is an amazing prayer – I don’t know how many times I have said it today. Thanks for letting me vent… Be blessed everyone.

I have a tendency to be impatient with my selfish desires. Specifically when it comes to relationships.

I think most of us are willing to suffer for God’s will or plan, but fail in long suffering because we take our eyes off the lord. We focus on the suffering and our own understanding of how to cope or cure it. If we allow satan to distract us to the point of taking our eyes off the lord, he temporarily wins. If my current and past trials have taught me anything, it’s to double down my focus on God and his purpose in the midst of those trials. God can and will use our trials for his glory! Don’t let suffering make us lose sight of God and his good and perfect will for us.

    Hey Vince
What a perfect devo for today. I have a brain tumor, not cancer praised God. Ive been a believer for over 30 years. I know that if I never received the blessing of this tumor I never would be as close to God as I am today. This situation is for His Glory so He can be praised and Glorified. If this situation can bring 1 of my friends or family member to give their life to Jesus Christ. Then this is all worth it. I’ll be having surgery soon so prayers are appreciated. His glory will be seen by many through this trial. That I know for sure. I’ll have a new body and continue to praise and glorify Him and Him alone either here on earth or in Heaven with Him.

Blessing to you and your family Vince

I feel like I am overwhelmed with all the mandates that have come out due to Covid-19. I get worked up and stressed but in light of Job’s life, I can persevere and trust God is preparing me for something greater.

  10. Chad Heggestad says:

On certain days, do you ever feel like your job is causing you to suffer like Job? Maybe that’s part of why it’s called a job. Always remember, though, that in the end there is victory.

  11. Eddie Ackerman says:

God is reminding me, much like my youngest son who is only 7 months old, that I throw temper tantrums at life, I whine and fuss, mostly passive-agressively, at those around me, but He is still there for me ALWAYS, just like I am there for my kids, ALWAYS, even when they don’t see it that way. God, please continue to give me patience to deal with my fussy child as You deal with me, Your fussy child, so that I may glorify You with my actions today and every day that You give me breath in my lungs. Amen.

  12. David J says:

I have learned and really still learning to trust in God in every trial and situation. He is my rock now and forever.

  13. Chris says:

I have not spoken with my business partner about my t.v. show in over a month. I gave it to God but I now find myself wondering when the outcome will reveal itself? For now, I am just hanging on to his promise.

  14. Alex Coon says:

My schedule should be built with God at the center or at least take the time to spend some quality experiences with Him.

  15. Matt says:

I needed to hear that….that really hit home. To know there is a “purpose” behind the suffering makes all the difference in the world.

  16. John Krumm says:

I have come to know Him better as the Sovereign One. When the times of difficulty come I am able, after seeing Him demonstrate His overflowing love for me time and again, to just exercise my traps and shrug saying “He has delivered me from trials before and will this time also”.

  17. Rich Thomas says:

I have learned to not ask “why” but to ask “who”. As in who is God? Then I read His word and find He is loving, kind, just, sovereign, faithful, never changing……..
That is a God I can trust.

  18. Dave says:

The study of Job is so timely in my life. I am so thankful that God is working through you Vince to present this study. God takes me to 5-25-21 Do this: Focus less on what Satan is doing in your suffering and more about what God is doing through you.

  19. Brian says:

I needed this today. I am in the middle of a storm in my life. I am starting to see God purpose and pray he can bring my family and I throught soon to end the hurt everyone feels.

  20. SHELDON Bullard says:

He is teaching me that i need to trust in Him and not on the arms of flesh, every time we lean on our own understanding we mess up.
