As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:1-5
Proper orientation is an absolute necessity for navigation. If you don’t know where you are, it is impossible to plot a course. Seeing where you have come from gives life to the journey. Sometimes I become discouraged when I experience a moment of sin in my life as a follower of Christ. It is all too easy to focus on the here and now instead of seeing both how far I’ve come and my current position in Christ. Paul reminds his audience of both who they were and who they are. This is encouraging.
Every man has experienced sin in his life, following the desires and thoughts of the flesh. Instinctively, we know where that leaves us with God. Just as Adam and Eve experienced shame and separation from God, we have had this experience as well. Carefully look at God’s position here in this passage above. Great love, rich mercy, and grace define how God reaches out to us. Live out today as a reflection of your current standing with God. And in case you need a reminder, you are saved by His grace.
DO THIS TODAY: Act as a free man saved by Grace.
