When God Shows Up Men Sober Up

ENGLISH

So remember Belshazzar is having a party. But the party is about to get spoiled. This is a little like when you were in your teens, and you planned to have all your friends over when your parents were gone, only to discover that your parents got home a little early. But in this case, it's a little more terrifying.

Immediately the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace, opposite the lampstand. And the king saw the hand as it wrote. Then the king's color changed, and his thoughts alarmed him; his limbs gave way, and his knees knocked together. The king called loudly to bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers. The king declared to the wise men of Babylon, "Whoever reads this writing, and shows me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around his neck and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom." Then all the king's wise men came in, but they could not read the writing or make known to the king the interpretation. Then King Belshazzar was greatly alarmed, and his color changed, and his lords were perplexed. — Daniel 5:5-9

So, fellas, the party comes to an end. The music stops. The grills are shut off. Goblets fall to the ground. It suddenly becomes silent as the room turns to view the event on the wall. Then the king stumbles to the ground. And he calls for his wise men to resolve the meaning of the writing. Wise men who, throughout the entire story of Daniel, never appear to be wise. They can't resolve anything. I don't know why he calls for them because they can't get anything done.

But one thing has gotten done. Belshazzar has instantly sobered up. Because when God shows up, a man sobers up. When God shows up, a man will experience one of two reactions: fear or terror. Reverent fear or deathly terror. These are the only two choices. Either a man is ready to meet God, or he's not. The ready man falls to the ground in worship because he knows God. The man who is not prepared falls to the ground in terror because he does not know God. And Belshazzar is the latter.

All men will have this moment. This is imminent. The apostle Paul said it this way in Romans 14.

For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written, "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God." So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. — Romans 14:10-12

In other words, there will be a day all men will do four things:

  1. Stand before God.
  2. Kneel before God.
  3. Confess that he is God.
  4. Give an account to God.

So the choice is pretty simple. We either confess that "Jesus is Lord" in this life so that he stands in our defense when giving our final account. Or we don't acknowledge "Jesus as Lord" and therefore don't have a defense, and still, we stand, kneel, and confess "Jesus is Lord" but do it too late and spend eternity in hell.

My point today is this. There will be a day in the future that God will show up. When he shows up, we'll be forced to sober up. You don't want to wait to sober up till then. Because then it's too late.

If today is the day, you want to make this confession. I want you to send me an email at the link below. https://beresolute.org/contact/. I would love to pray for you as you make this confession and commitment.

ASK THIS: Have you sobered up?

DO THIS: Say it out loud, "Jesus is Lord!"

PRAY THIS: God, I am ready to sober up today. I claim your son's righteousness as my own. Be the Leader, Lord, and Savior of my intoxicated and foolish life.

PLAY THIS: You Are My Righteousness.

Hahaha! Great devo. Flipped my truck and landed upside down a few years ago. Plus dwi. That sobered up and made me decide to do everything I could to start obeying! I need to recall that event when I get complacent. It gives me inkling that there’s a hint of truth to calvanism, in some manner. With all of the surrounding rocks and metal poles there is NO way the ceiling shouldn’t have been punctured and much worse.

Great message today Vince my man. You hit the nail on the head. I struggled with drug addiction for about 25 years, had gone through 3 treatment facilities, but it wasn’t until I surrendered my life to the Lord (who was there all along) that I began to believe that WE could overcome this. I’ve been clean over 2 years now and growing spiritually stronger everyday. I love telling people what a miracle Jesus performed and still performing in my life daily. God bless. 🙏

  3. Tom F. Sr. says:

Thanks Pastor Vince! It is in fact, a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of THE Living God. – (Hebrews 10:31)

  4. Eddie Ackerman says:

    Jesus is Lord!
Praise God for sending His ONLY Begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will have everlasting life. Amen.

  5. Dave Soderquist says:

I have not been the man you’ve wanted me to be. I have sinned in thought word and deed. I ask for your forgiveness and ask that you give me the tools to become the spiritual leader you want me to be. Jesus, you are Lord of my life.

God find us wherever we are. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. It’s been a super busy summer seems like I’ve been to different parts of the country always in a rush. I see those effects on my spiritual walk when my reading praying and connecting with God become less of a priority hurt and fear find a way to creep in. When you’re disconnected from your church for weeks at a time you start to find yourself thirsting for fellowship and more importantly some sense of a security that we get when we’re inside the church being surrounded with people who believe as I do. This devotion today reminded me that we will all face God, I for one continue to pursue him in fear so that the time of judgement will not be filled with terror!
