Forget It And Press Ahead

ENGLISH

Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. — Philippians 3:12-14

I think we are all prone to look back and live in the defeat of the past. The emotions, pains, and memories of these events are powerful. Sometimes we are reminded of them by an event, a repeated mistake, a feeling of shame, or a vindictive person who reminds us of them. Like all men, we're imperfect. But our imperfections should not drive us back. They should propel us forward. They should drive us forward to what lies ahead. God is beckoning us and calling us to look up and look to him.

Fellas forget the past. Forget it. If you have done business with your past and sought forgiveness, then it's time. You need to let it go. Just forget it. And start a new year with a new double effort — one that forgets and another that strains, presses, and strives after God. Are you with me? If so, write in the comments below that one thing you will forget. And then let's leave it there — together.

ASK THIS: What do you need to forget this year?

DO THIS: Write it below and leave it there. And then strain forward to what lies ahead.

PRAY THIS: God, I am leaving it behind today. And every time I am reminded of my past, I commit to laying it down again. Call me forward and help me strain ahead.

  2. Paul B says:

I will leave behind my constant correcting my son and being so demanding. I will strive to hold my tongue and let him learn from his own mistakes. I will help him grow to be a Godly man by leading by my example.

  3. Dwayne Dehling says:

That I would let go of the fact that my ex wife and I aren’t going to reconcile unless God opens that door we have been divorced for 21 years

  4. Rob Anderson says:

I need to forget how badly, at times, I have treated my wife over our 36 years of marriage- to that end I press forward asking the Holy Spirit to show me how to love and serve my wife better and better each day AND pursue our relationship deeper that is grounded in Jesus Christ.

    • Barry Mayes says:

This is a great admission brother. Focus on your relationship with God rather than worrying about your inadequacies. Then you will naturally become more loving. The closer you get to God the more He will reveal of His love for you. Thus the more you will become like Him as the Holy Spirit lives in you and replaces your old ways with God’s way. Focus on God not the problem.

  5. Marquis Coulter says:

I Will let go and leave behind past hurts, pains and feelings of failing and mistakes. I will let go of thoughts and memories of a past breakup and feelings of guilt and shame!

    • Barry Mayes says:

Focus on God not your past. When Jesus died in our place he took away our guilt and shame. He will look after the people we have wronged.

  6. Rex says:

I need to forgive and forget and issue that was done to me by a coworker a couple of years ago. Lord I pray for no more bitterness.

    • Barry Mayes says:

Amen. Even better if you can forgive them. Hard I know. But will enable you to carry any baggage more lightly.

  7. Mike says:

I want to leave behind my past issues with porn and remain strong in God’s word! In 2022 I want to focus more on my relationships with others, especially my wife of 31 years.

    • Mark says:

      Mike,

Praying for you and with you brother, I share your past issues and all that goes with it related to porn. God is good, He will heal that past in us!

    • Barry Mayes says:

If your hand sins cut it off. If you are tempted to watch porn walk the other way or turn off the TV. Focus on God not your weakness and you will quickly rid yourself of the habit. You might still be tempted. All men are tempted. Focus on your relationship with Gid and everything else will fall into place. When it does all get better keep your eyes on Him. The Devil is very clever and letting us think the issues have disappeared….

  8. Seth says:

I know I’ll never be good enough, but my faith in Christ Jesus is the only thing that will save me. God doesn’t expect me to be perfect, but he does expect me to pursue him daily to grow closer to him. I leave behind the days I skipped my devo and prayer time, instead I look forward to the time I will have in the new year to spend with my Lord and savior.

    • Barry Mayes says:

Focus on God not your weaknesses. We are all broken. God loves you. You are His precious child. He has great plans for you. He wants the best for you. Don’t beat yourself up. God sees all the good things in you and smiles when you talk to Him. Why wouldn’t he? he is our Heavenly Father and fathers long for their children to talk to them.

  9. Paul L says:

My wife called me out on something the other day. She said, You are always trying to have everything perfect: the perfect decorations, the perfect house and be the perfect Christian.” That just stopped me stone cold in my tracks. When I heard her say the “perfect Christian” I realized how wrong I was. The only perfection is Jesus and his grace, which I ask for today. I need to let go of trying to control every finite detail of my life and just live it with all my faults knowing that as long as Jesus is in my heart, there is no need for perfection. Amen!
Great message Vince and per usual PERFECT timing.

    • Carl J Snider says:

      Hi Paul,
I live on the other side in that I can admit to my imperfections but my wife can not. It is creating a division in our marriage because she can never admit to her imperfections and ends up belittling me and making me feel inferior. I know this comes from her past childhood trauma and is her coping mechanism. She is seeking God and counseling for help but it has been 6 years of living this way. That is why I have to listen to God and what He says about me. The men from Center Lake have given me words of encouragement that helps. Thank you. Please keep praying for her and myself that God will fix this. You also are in my thoughts and prayers every week.

      • Paul L says:

Thanks Carl, and yes I pray for you and your wife. God will guide you through this difficult storm and you will persevere.

  10. Tom Radach says:

I will forget about my human desire to “be right” and focus on “getting it right”.

This way I seek to understand and work with those people God has placed in my life. Staying curious, using kind words and not putting them down or being judgmental to make myself “feel” better.
    Tom R

  11. Gregg says:

Leave behind my tongue of bitterness and push for more words that show joy, hope and building up of people! I’ll start now. Vince, your Men’s Devotions are awesome! That is the first thing I do every day.

    • Barry Mayes says:

When you wake up each morning choose joy. Make it a daily habit to choose joy. God wants us to be joyful.

  12. Mark says:

I’m leaving behind all of the shame, guilt, pain and garbage related to sexual immorality and pornography. God has done a mighty work in my life with all of this in 2021. Every day I am challenged by thoughts, memories, and at times temptations. But God is good and everyday I give that battle to Him – and it’s over. Thank you God for delivering me from that sin!

    • Gary says:

I hear you brother. I is also in my rear view mirror. I pray for God’s forgiveness and He strengthen me and makes me the man He intended

  13. Scott says:

I’m leaving behind my worries, wrong thoughts and negative thoughts that seems to keep me from moving forward. I need to keep reminding myself that I’m a new creature in Christ.

  14. MJ says:

Great word Vince. I choose to leave behind the past offences of some annoying guys, most who probably didn’t even realize they were being annoying. Petty stuff and I just need to have tougher skin, more of a ‘whatever’ attitude, laugh stuff off, and reframe past offences more as a compliment if others are envious and part of others’ issues and insecurities versus my issue.

  15. Jack Dellinger says:

    Good devo, Vince.

I need to forget trying to go back to the way things were two years ago. Even without Covid, which has produced a quantum shift in normal, these never stay the same. It is time to give control of my life back solely to God and quit letting the news cycle have a negative impact on my thoughts, my mood and my outlook. I read yesterday that faith is not ignorant or naïve and does not spread misinformation. I need to take that kind of faith into the new year.

    • Barry Mayes says:

Well done. Focus on God not TV news or the challenges surrounding us. There’s a whole lot of serious issues out there. The Devil wants us to worry about all these sinister issues. Don’t give the devil the pleasure of worry and fear. We have nothing to be afraid of when we focus on God.

  16. Patrick Garman. 209-795 5993 says:

Yes maybe you can help me I’ve signed up in the past for your daily devotions had a problem with my phone for whatever reason now I can’t seem to get the devotions I checked my spam folders and trash no luck. The enemy is having a field day with this one I look forward to rebuking him in the name of Jesus Christ and continuing my walk with our Lord Jesus Christ Thankyou Resolute BIC

  17. Trent says:

I have more to list than anyone could to read. There is no way to fix it or list it or make amends for many reasons. I must figure a way to lay it down and stop holding me back and continuing to “define” me. Lord I lay “MAY PAIN AMD SHAME” here. Take it from me that it might not take another ounce of my energy nor rob another second of my joy. In 2022 I hang my hat on John 15:11

    • Barry Mayes says:

Jesus took away your pain and shame for ever when he was nailed to that cross. God will look after all the people you have wronged. Leave it all behind you. You can’t undo it. Focus on God not your wrong doings. Paul the apostle managed to move on from his dreadful past. King David had also been a very naughty boy. But look how Paul and David became great leaders/teachers. Think of how God will want to use you. One day you will be writing great internet posts encouraging men who are broken. Focus on God and forget your past-or carry it lightly.

  18. Greg says:

The pain of divorce and resultant challenges of loss of relationships. Help me, by Your strength Lord to let go of the hurts. To understand personality disorders, to pray for those affected by them…to glorify You above all. And to singularly focus on You and Your glory!!!

    • Trent says:

Amen. I think you got it right here. Keep praying this and practicing it. It will get easier. Lord may we all pray for each other and work together to get through. Be with this one of yours. Take his pain. Work in his life. I pray he see You everywhere he looks and Lord may we all bring the praises and glory back to you.

  19. Bill says:

Happy New Year guys! Today’s devotional is a huge challenge. I’d say this is an easier said then done challenge. Good luck pressing on in 22!

        • Barry Mayes says:

Divorce. Awful. I can’t imagine the pain. But look to God not the past. God will look after those who have been hurt. Jesus took away our pain and shame when he was nailed to that cross. Just leave it all at the feet of Jesus-He will deal with it. God has great plans for each of us. Just focus on God not the past. Not our weaknesses. Not our struggles. Just God.
