But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. James 1:22-25

Mirrors are a perfect call to action. They reflect what is accurate about your appearance and prompt an immediate change. If you’re like me, you probably don’t even think about the kind of instant response you have become accustomed to when faced with a mirror. Fixing that random patch of hair sticking up, clearing the food wedged in between your teeth, or merely straightening your collar, are all examples of actions prompted by a mirror.

James spells this out clearly: the difference is in doing, not merely hearing. Hearing and not doing would be like looking into a mirror and not removing the leftover toothpaste from your chin. You know what to do, but you don’t do it. There are proven benefits to being a doer of the word. Every man experiences blessing in doing. I’ve never heard a guy tell me he regretted listening and doing what he knew he ought to. Plenty of men will say they regret not doing what they heard. Don’t fool yourself, be a doer.
