Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe. Galatians 3:21-22

Men are motivated by both performance and measurement. I remember very early on learning that working hard compensated for many areas in my life that I lacked natural skill. I would observe those at the top of my class, my team, or among my peers. I wanted to win and would routinely measure myself up to those around me. Our sports-saturated culture only fuels this mindset. The better I became, the closer I was to the top.

Unfortunately, it was natural to transfer a healthy dose of competition into other areas of my life. The result of that has not always been helpful. In my mind, I have equated the Law of God to a ladder. If each rung is a successfully followed rule, I could just rise to the top if I became more moral than those around me. This was a flawed thought.

The Law of God is a tool meant to show all men that there is no performance good enough for success. Getting on top and reaching God can not be achieved by our ascent up the rungs of good behavior. This standard is a means to remind us that it is only faith in Jesus Christ is the means of obtaining God’s promise. Take an honest assessment of your life and place faith in Christ when you fail to measure up.

DO THIS TODAY: Confess sin to God and thank Him for His promise through Jesus Christ.
