As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. Ephesians 2:1-2
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Colossians 3:1-4
In the economy of a man’s spiritual life, there is no such thing as adding Christ to what you already have. When sin entered the world, there was a transaction that put up a roadblock between God and man. In a spiritual sense, we died. Adam no longer had access to God as he once had. There was a rift that was insurmountable because of his apathy toward God’s command and indulgence in sin. Paul calls this being “dead in your transgressions and sins.” But as we know, the story does not end there.
As men, when we take on the life of Christ and become His disciple, we don’t add Jesus to our dead life. The truth is we trade our old life for a new one. Putting death to death was made possible by the cross of Christ, and in His power, we can do the same. We are trading one life for another. There is no addition to our lives; it is a complete transformation. Gentlemen, that trade is good news.
