When You Understand & Others Don't

In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. — John 1:4-5

Last time we discussed the first part of this text. That Jesus, or the "Word," is the "ever-existing life." But now John adds this metaphor. And it's important because he will use this one a few times. It's "light."

And if you are even a casual reader of the Bible, you know this is the first thing that God creates. First, there was God and the Word that always existed, and next comes "light." So with this metaphor, John takes us back to the first pages of the Bible again.

But it is a metaphor, so we must ask the obvious question. What does this metaphor mean? And the word light infers "understanding." So the text could read:

In him was [ever-existing] life, and the life was the [understanding] of men. The [understanding] shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. — John 1:4-5

So when we read it this way, we discover another word and metaphor. The word "darkness." And darkness infers "ignorance" or a state of "moral and spiritual ignorance." This means we can now read the text this way:

In him was [ever-existing] life, and the life was the [understanding] of men. The [understanding] shines [into the spiritual ignorance], and the [ignorance] has not overcome it. — John 1:4-5

So what John has done is borrowed from the schools of Greek language and Greek philosophy and demonstrated how Jesus is everything unresolved in Greek schools of thought. That Jesus is the resolution to the divide between what is human and divine. That the divine Logos (or the Word) has come down to earth, made himself known, and has spoken with man to bring divine understanding that we lacked to that point in history. He lived with us and among us. But the world was confused about him because of their limited understanding. But those who want to understand can have understanding because it is found from, in, and through him, the Word, the Understanding of God.

This explains why we, as believers, sometimes see something so clearly that others do not. By hearing and believing in the Word, we receive divine understanding. And continuous engagement with this Word by reading the Word results in a continuously redeemed and renewed mind. And the redeemed and renewed mind sees things that the ignorant mind does not. So the next time you are irritated by all the ignorance you see and hear in the world, remember, you are not going crazy. This is just your redeemed mind seeing something others have yet to see. It's also an excellent reminder to keep your mind in the Word because it's the only way you are not going to go crazy.

ASK THIS: Do you see with greater understanding?

DO THIS: See everything with your redeemed mind.

PRAY THIS: God, redeem my thinking, show me your Word, and give me divine understanding.

PLAY THIS: Whatever Your Plan Is.

I need prayer guys. First my 12 year old daughter is suffering right now from DMDD which is an anger mental state. She swears and damages things when she doesn’t get her way. I’m trying to cope and get her into therapy. She hates me.
Second my little daughters school is incorporating the lgbtq concepts into her reading classes and they don’t offer a opt out or alternative option. Please pray for us.

Daniel Rushton

Prayers, light, and love brother. I hope you can get your daughter the help she needs.

Chris

Thank you. Home life is toxic

Trent

The idea of raising young kids in this world is a weighty one for sure. Many struggles that our parents did not have to overcome or even dream of I am sure. Sounds like you have even more than average struggles as well. I have expressed this opinion to others in a similar situation and I would like to share it with you. I think sometimes God has a child that He loves and knows will need extra levels of caring of some sort. I believe He chooses someone who can handle the job to give them to. So I have a pretty good idea that you are just the man for the job. You may not know it, or have the tools yet, or any number of anxiety or fear or frustration inducing variables at play…. but if you let God be your rock and you be their rock, I believe you can get through this and God can be glorified through it, and through you, and through them. I am praying for your strength. For your situation in general. And for you to feel and “see” God in this struggle and know it will be hard but you can do it. Phillipians 4:13. 2nd Corinthians 4:17-18. John 16:33. Romans 8:18. Strength and perseverance to you and unwavering faith.

Chris

Thanks for taking the time for me and the prayers. I’ll read these over for sure

Praying for you Chris for God’s guidance and His divine wisdom. As far as your 12 year old , as a Board Certified Mental Health Coach and Brain Health Coach, before you allow them to start loading her with psychotropic drugs, you may want to contact Amen Clinics and if you can, get her in for a Brain SPECT scan. Daniel Amen is the best in the business . www,amenclinics.com There are possibly some holistic ways to treat her such as dietary changes, neutricuticals (supplements) , exercise etc. If I can be of any help , feel free to reach out to me . Thank you very much

Brian

Hi Chris.
First prayers go out to you and your family. Trent said it well, let God be your Rock so you can be the rock for your family.
Lastly about school, we homeschool. At first I was not sure how it would work. Turns out it was the best thing we did. I know it doesn’t work for everyone but you may want to check it out.

Chris

Thanks God Bless

Trent

I think this may help me accept some of the decisions people around me make with more compassion and patience. If their flashlight is not quite as bright as mine yet, they cannot see all that I see and therefore make a decision on different criteria than I. Praise God for The Word and His word.

Massimo Giovannetti

Absolutely, Trent! I experienced the same thing. As my understanding went up so did my intolerance of others who were still ignorant and had to and still have to remind myself and discipline myself to choose love, remembering I was once that ignorant person. We can do this by lovingly share what we know and understand.

Daniel Rushton

Amen. Nicely said.
