When God Does The Thing We Don't Want Him To
But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, “Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.” And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach. — Acts 5:17-21
Ok, this section is laughable. And here is what is so funny about it. The Sadducees were a sect of Jews that held tightly to the first five books of the Old Testament known as the Torah. And this meant they did not believe in a couple of things that other Jews believed. Specifically, the bodily resurrection from the dead and, second, angelic beings. Do you see what's so funny here now? I hope so! The apostles were arrested and imprisoned, but during the night, they were released by an angel of God to go back out and preach the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Now that's funny! Now you cannot say God is not humorous.
But this ain't so funny when it happens to us.
I know that sometimes God does very the thing I don't want him to. He blesses my opponent. He elects the candidate for which I didn't vote. He allows a sinful person to succeed. And while I wish he would do something different, God sometimes does the thing I don't want him to do. But when God does this, I have found it wiser for me to stop resisting his will and submit to it. These moments are nudges of his will. I have also learned that in a match of wills with God, I am not a match. And in the end, it's better to submit than to become the punch line of God.
ASK THIS: Where are you resisting God's will today?
DO THIS: Give in to his will.
PRAY THIS: God, things aren't working out as I thought. I am going to stop resisting and submit to your will. Do what you see best and show me a better way than just my way.
