When Trials
"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." James 1:2-4
Are you serious, "when?" James would choose that word. As if you should anticipate trials and see them coming around the next turn? But yes, he was right. You do encounter them almost every day in "various kinds." Yet remember that the problems you face are there not to irritate you, but rather to make you better. Through them, you become a better man, husband, father, and leader. So don't fixate and ruminate on the people, or just the circumstance, but rather the lesson that God is teaching you. For God is giving you not a trial but an opportunity; see it as such. It's an opportunity to become "perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." Yes, you will be better on the other side. And this is your "joy!" So be steadfast, reliable, and fail not my brother for soon you'll find the lesson in the trial and we'll all benefit from the experience you've learned.
DO THIS: Be steadfast.
PRAYER: God, too often I see only my circumstances and the people who cause and inflict them. Today let me see the lesson you are trying to teach me, and with this give me the strength to be steadfast.
